On a late summer night two years ago, Tiburon police asked Yema Khalif to prove he owned YEMA, the local clothing store that bears his name. The fallout from that August 2020 encounter shoved the quiet coastal enclave to the center of a racial justice moment that began just months earlier with George Floyd’s murder.

On Tuesday, the store owners will stand with town officials to announce changes enacted as a result of the incident. The changes include policy and training updates as well as the formation of a Citizen’s Advisory Panel to provide a forum between residents and police; one of the store owners is expected to serve as a member.

“We love our community,” Khalif said in a release. “We wanted to make sure that people in the community are aware of these issues and that Tiburon Police Department made changes to improve policing in the community.”

The unique partnership between the store owners and town officials stemmed from an Aug. 21, 2020, incident that was recorded by an officer’s body worn camera at YEMA in downtown Tiburon.

U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle of Florida said the mandate exceeds the statutory authority of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Wearing a mask cleans nothing. At most, it traps virus droplets. But it neither ‘sanitizes’ the person wearing the mask nor ‘sanitizes’ the conveyance,” Mizelle wrote.

Some doctors say it’s time to rename low-grade prostate cancer to eliminate the alarming C-word. Cancer cells develop in nearly all prostates as men age, and most prostate cancers are harmless. Changing the name could lead more low-risk patients to skip unnecessary surgery and radiation.“This is the least aggressive, wimpiest form of prostate cancer that is literally incapable of causing symptoms or spreading to other parts of the body,” said University of Chicago Medicine’s Dr. Scott Eggener, who is reviving a debate about how to explain the threat to worried patients.

 “If you reduce anxiety, you’ll reduce overtreatment,” said Dr. David Penson of Vanderbilt University. “The word ‘cancer,’ it puts an idea in their head: ‘I have to have this treated.’”

It is too soon to predict how far the new sub variants might spread and how sick they might make people, said Michael T. Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota.

Today - Joaquin Ciria -  a man who has been in prison for 32 years for a murder he says he didn’t commit has his conviction overturned and a new trial was set.  It’s because of the Innocence Commission out of the San Francisco DA’s Office. “Our office is proud of and grateful for the work of the Innocence Commission in rectifying the wrongful conviction of Mr. Ciria,” Boudin said in an emailed statement. “Although we cannot give him back the decades of his life lost we are grateful that the court has corrected this miscarriage of justice.”

Pressure is mounting for President Biden to visit Ukraine after his administration said it is considering sending a senior official to the embattled country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba on Sunday both expressed an interest in having Biden visit Ukraine; British Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited the war-torn country earlier this month. Zelensky told CNN’s “State of the Union” that he expects the U.S. leader will do so. “I think he will. And I think he — but it’s not — I mean, it’s his decision, of course. And about the safety situation, it depends. I mean that. But I think — I think he’s the leader of the United States, and that’s why he should come here to see,” Zelensky said. Kuleba said a visit from Biden “would be an important message of support for us” during an interview with CBS’s “Face the Nation,” and he noted that a meeting between the two presidents could “pave the way” for new supplies, weapons and discussions on a possible political settlement to end the conflict.

Despite the benefits unmanned vessels might provide, experts have questions about what the Navy wants them to do: Do they want vessels that can operate autonomously deep into the sea for weeks on end? Do they simply want vessels that can fire missiles without risking lives? Do they want a large number of ships that can be built, maintained and operated at a lower price?

 Sen. Dianne Feinstein defended her service representing California in the Senate in the wake of a report that colleagues of hers are concerned about her ability to continue serving, and she said she does not plan to step down before the end of her term, which runs through 2024.

Every April 15, Major League Baseball goes to great lengths to honor Jackie Robinson on the anniversary of the day, now 75 years ago, when he broke the sport’s color barrier. On that day, every player wears his iconic No. 42, which is otherwise retired across the majors.

Honoring Robinson is a year-round endeavor, too, for MLB and the country at large. In 1987, baseball renamed its rookie of the year awards in his honor. Posthumously, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and a Congressional Gold Medal.

To find out where the COVID pandemic is headed, look in the sewer. As the United States enters year three of the coronavirus pandemic, disease trackers are trying to stay one step ahead of the constantly evolving virus — by hunting for it in feces.

Eventually, the CDC plans to use wastewater surveillance to gather data on other pathogens, such as antibiotic-resistant bacteria, norovirus, influenza, a deadly fungal pathogen called Candida auris and food-borne infections caused by E. coli and salmonella.

Jason Tharp wants to write books for weird kids — because he was one. On April 6, as Tharp prepared to read “It’s Okay to Be a Unicorn!” to students the next day at an elementary school in the Buckeye Valley Local School District, north of Columbus, he got a call from the principal saying higher-ups didn’t want him reading the book.

“I just straight up asked him, ‘Does somebody think I made a gay book?’ ” Tharp said. “And he said, ‘Yes. … The concern is that you’re coming with an agenda to recruit kids to become gay.’ ”
