The Food and Drug Administration is moving to soon allow people to receive booster shots that are different from their first Covid-19 vaccine doses, people familiar with the matter said. 

The FDA won’t recommend any booster over the others but will permit people to get a booster shot that is different from the shot they first received, one of the people familiar with the matter said. 

The FDA is seeking to authorize mixing and matching as soon as this week, the people familiar with the matter said. The FDA is also expected to approve Moderna Inc. and Johnson & Johnson boosters this week, according to a person familiar with the matter. 

The Center for Countering Digital Hate has named Dr. Rashid Buttar as one of its "Disinformation Dozen."  According to CCD, the group of 12 anti-vaxxers is responsible for almost two-thirds of COVID-19 disinformation.  Buttar, a licensed physician, told CNN: "If I'm wrong so be it," when asked if his claims could cause death.

US Senate Democrats tried to pass voting rights legislation blocked by the Republicans

A bill aimed at thwarting restrictive new voting laws enacted in Republican-led states failed to advance in the U.S. Senate on Wednesday, as Republican lawmakers blocked a Democratic effort to begin debating the measure.

It was the third time this year Senate Democrats tried to advance a voting rights bill in reaction to new state balloting restrictions that were fueled by Donald Trump's false claims of a stolen election.

Enough of the chamber's 50 Republicans had voted to block the measure from advancing, a move that could bring new pressure on Democrats to change the Senate's filibuster rule that requires 60 votes to pass most legislation.

Senator Angus King, an independent who aligns with Democrats, told reporters that if Republicans again block the bill, "we would either have to figure out a rule change or we have to try to have discussions toward a compromise solution."

Among the many conservative factions that are giddy like kids on Christmas Eve over the Texas abortion ban, which could lead to the effective overturning of Roe v. Wade via the Mississippi test case currently before the Supreme Court, the Catholic Church is eager to intimidate politicians into toeing the church’s line on abortion. The problem? Most Washington, D.C. Catholic elected officials are pro-choice Democrats, and not insignificantly, that includes President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Renegade Catholic clergy already tried the bit where they were going to deny Biden communion, but Pope Francis shot that shit down last month. Here in San Francisco, Captain COVID Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone has been quite vocal at haranguing Pelosi over her staunch support for abortion rights, and now the Chronicle reports Cordileone is running a national advertising campaign against Pelosi. But the campaign called “Rose and a Rosary for Nancy” seems to be all hype and few results.

Proposals to expand the size of the Supreme Court are facing skepticism from some members of the commission that President Biden appointed to consider overhauling the federal judiciary. But there is something closer to a consensus that imposing term limits on the justices is worth exploring.

“Commissioners are divided on whether court expansion would be wise,” one draft paper said. “The risks of court expansion are considerable, including that it could undermine the very goal of some of its proponents of restoring the court’s legitimacy.”

“Recent polls suggest that a majority of the public does not support court expansion,” the paper said. “And as even some supporters of court expansion acknowledged during the commission’s public hearings, the reform — at least if it were done in the near term and all at once — would be perceived by many as a partisan maneuver.”

One day before a mob of former President Donald J. Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol, Stephen K. Bannon, a former top adviser to Mr. Trump, made a prediction to listeners of his radio show.

“Now we’re on, as they say, the point of attack — the point of attack tomorrow,” Mr. Bannon said on Jan. 5. “It’s going to kick off. It’s going to be very dramatic.”

It is because of comments like that, which foreshadowed the violence that played out during the Capitol riot, that the House committee investigating the assault is interested in questioning Mr. Bannon. But the former counselor to Mr. Trump has refused to cooperate with the inquiry, citing the former president’s claim of executive privilege.

The panel on Tuesday voted unanimously to recommend charging Mr. Bannon with criminal contempt of Congress for defying its subpoena, sending the matter to the House, which is expected to approve the move and hand the matter over to the Justice Department for prosecution.

Former President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit Monday in DC District Court against the House select committee investigating the January 6 insurrection and the National Archives in an effort to keep records from his presidency secret by claiming executive privilege.

The lawsuit from Trump is an attempt to block the work of the House committee as it investigates his actions before and during the siege of the Capitol. The court action also marks his latest effort in a long and thorny fight against subpoenas from the Democratic-controlled US House.

The Biden administration has declined to assert executive privilege over a first tranche of Trump-era records, and Trump is currently opposed to the release of about 40 documents.

The lawsuit alleges that the House's requests for documents from the executive branch "are unprecedented in their breadth and scope and are untethered from any legitimate legislative purpose."

It also claims that President Joe Biden's refusal to protect some of the documents was "a political ploy to accommodate his partisan allies." A spokesperson for Trump leaned into this argument in a statement announcing the lawsuit that accused Democrats of trying to change the political narrative with their January 6 probe.

Three San Francisco school board members will face a recall vote in a mid-February special election, city officials announced Monday. Officials confirmed they verified enough signatures to put the recall on the ballot, which will determine the fate of President Gabriela López, Vice President Faauuga Moliga and commissioner Alison Collins. The Feb. 15 election will also select the city’s next assessor-recorder.

Organizers launched the recall effort as San Francisco families expressed anger and frustration that public schools remained closed for much of last school year even as other districts and private schools reopened in the Bay Area.

Critics of the board said even as distance learning devastated many families, commissioners spent significant time and energy on renaming 44 schools, a decision later reversed, and ending the merit-based admission to academically elite Lowell High School.

Several public officials as well as political organizations and community groups previously called for Collins to resign over anti-Asian tweets she posted prior to her election. Collins refused to take the tweets down or apologize for the wording, saying they were taken out of context. Mayor London Breed, 10 of 11 supervisors as well as dozens of current and former elected officials demanded her resignation.

Teachers in a Texas school district were told last week that a new state law requiring them to present multiple perspectives about “widely debated and currently controversial” issues meant they needed to make “opposing” views on the Holocaust available to students.

NBC News obtained an audio recording of the official, Gina Peddy, the Carroll Independent School District’s executive director of curriculum and instruction, speaking to the teachers about how to work under the constraints of the new law, known as House Bill 3979. The law was passed amid a wave of efforts in Republican-led statehouses to prevent “critical race theory,” “divisive” topics and concepts related to race and bias from being taught to children.

“Under this law, it would be impossible to teach that Nazi Germany was inherently antisemitic, or that the Third Reich oppressed Jews simply because they were Jews, because that would identify Nazis as inherently biased and Jews as inherently and systemically oppressed,” Russel Neiss, a Jewish educator in St. Louis, wrote in the St. Louis Jewish Light in May about legislation that had been proposed in Missouri. Lawmakers there are continuing to push for anti-critical race theory rules for schools.
