  • Practice Is Greater Than Routine

On Episode 52 of The $300 Startup Podcast...

I replaced routines and stuck with my practices. The things that I have done the longest in my life, no matter what the age. Not a superstition -doing the task daily because the repetition set's up the rhythm for your day- but the things you do as life long pursuits. It's the difference between making something up and having that thing you do.

You and I can both have a unique workout routine, diets, and preferred times of the day. But ultimately, we still have to exercise. One is a routine, completely made up. The other is a thing you do, regardless. I eat the same thing every day, at the same time, that's a routine. I shorten my feeding window with intermittent fasting, that's a practice.

These are my four practices. They keep me align with who I want to be and how I want to live.

Reading- “My alma mater was books, a good library…. I could spend the rest of my life reading, just satisfying my curiosity.” -- Malcolm X

Exercise- "Exercise and temperance can preserve something of our early strength even in old age." --Cicero

Journaling- “I can shake off everything as I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn.” --Anne Frank

Writing- "You can make anything by writing." --C.S. Lewis

  • 3 Steps To Creating Products People Want to Buy.

On Episode 50 of The $300 Startup Podcast...

I once spent six months creating videos to get people to buy a product. To make matters worst, I was recording, editing, and posting a weekly "tips" video series to go with it. Consistency is key right? Wrong. Six months and the only thing I had to show for it was a big goose egg in sales, not a single one.

It wasn't going to matter how many videos I made, how much time I spent, what software I used, or what it cost. I was missing a key component. I did not know my audience.

This brings us to the antidote.

  • Intermittent Fasting (again). Why This Time it's More Than Fitness.

On Episode 49 of The $300 Startup Podcast...

What I've noticed this time around with I.F is something I didn't expect. What's intriguing this time is that the benefits aren't only showing up in my fitness, but in other areas in my life. In a short amount of time, it has revamped my mental health and provided much-needed focus to my thoughts.

I had to find out more about Intermittent Fasting, from a different angle. I went down the rabbit hole on this topic. What I found out was incredible. What I found out was that it's NOT a dieting fad. It's was a lifestyle. One more in line with that of our ancestors.

Since starting Intermittent fasting, I have seen huge gains in clarity and focus. My thoughts feel less like a New York City street and more like a cruise down a California beach. I seem to know what I want, how I want to do it, and why, without procrastination or hesitation. Ideas for topics to write about moves to restructure the old and input the new in my business. And the energy required to do it all. I recommend this article Benjamin Hardy wrote for the Observer if you want more detail on how I'm getting these results. In it he says,

"When you remove yourself from the noise of addiction — even food addiction temporarily — you clear space for the subtle signal of your guiding truth."

Fasting provides "superhuman" benefits according to Hardy. I agree 1,000 percent.

    Better Sleep,

    Better focus,

    less anxiety,

    better brain function,

    better sleep,

    better energy,

    better emotional balance,

    more productivity,

    increase weight-loss,

and the list goes on (especially on a cellular level.)

Definitely "superhuman" powers if you ask me. No radioactive insect bite needed in this story. Only the effort to make a lifestyle change.

  • Avoid Reaching Your Upper Limit!

On Episode 48 of The $300 Startup Podcast...

If you follow anything that I write about you will see a common trend. I’m fascinated by the crazy shit the mind does to us. It’s like a double agent that we’ve allowed into the highest sectors of our mental governance. It just sits there, dishing its dose of self-sabotage whenever it’s left unattended.

So I’m reading the book, “Personality is not permanent” by Ben Hardy. In it, I find out about this notion that took me for a spin. “The Upper Limits Problem.” This was the gem that I’ve earned from digging through hundreds of hours of self-help resources. This is what I’ve been looking for.

    Finally,

The explanation for not allowing myself to be good at anything.
The root of the excuses I’ve made for not scaling a business.
The reason for going back to terrible habits after a bit of success.
    It’s because that’s where I’m most comfortable, that’s where it’s safe.

  • A Reminder That Life Doesn't Care

On Episode 47 of the $300 Startup Podcast...

The Stoics talk a ton about meditating on your mortality for this reason.

We live in a world where we are in denial of our mortality.

It scares us so much that we much rather not even think about it.

This is a weakness. Think about it...

Why would we pretend that we are invincible?

It's like living in someone's space and not expecting them to collect rent...just makes no sense.

We will die, all of us will...

When, where, and how is beyond our understanding.

We need to meditate on our death because it will make things clearer for us...

It will make us aware and more connected with how we spend our time because we know it's coming.

  • Find your Ideal Person...

On Episode 46 of The $300 Startup Podcast...

In a pre-screening to the classic film Psycho, Hitchcock's wife delayed the release of the film. She noticed something in the film that no one else in the room picked up on. She noticed one of the actors swallowed in a scene where their character was supposed to be dead! Hitchcock didn't argue. He knew his wife Alma was correct. She was his I.R. So he put the film release on hold, and made the changes without hesitation.

It doesn't matter what creation we're working on. It can be a novel or a script. A musical masterpiece or an educational course. The only important thing is, you need to know who your Ideal Person is.

Who are you creating this for?

When you're creating with the "doors closed", can you envision how this person will respond?

    Will they cry?

    Will they laugh?

    Will they even understand?....

  • Me Vs. The Bull

On Episode 45 of the $300 Startup Podcast...

There I am, in the field, with my heart racing, wondering if I should hold my ground or flee.

About 10 yards away stands the reason for my higher heart rate and current dilemma.

It's twenty-four hundred pounds of aggression & muscle

    ...it's a bull!

This thing hated that I was there,

was making all type of noises and snarls,

and was looking dead at me.

Strangely enough, I've been here before, this isn't the first time I've had this fight.

I found a strategy that has worked in the past to not panic the bull.

If I panic him, I'm going to be in some serious danger.

I know that if I run, the bull will chase me.

I know that if I scream at it, I will anger it.

I know that if I anger it, I have no chance of getting it to listen to me.

I have to make it feel like it's in control, like it's his idea to go away.

I just have to nudge him in the direction I want him to go, and remove all the other options available to him.
