Back in the late 60's and 70's the instrumental was big part of radio in Hampton Roads. They were mostly use as lead in to newscast. Normally when there wasn't enough time for vocal track. Melting Pot by Booker T and the m g's,'Green Onion 'was a a hit on stereo 99 which later became rocker fm99 was important because this was the first pre smooth jazz format of this type with all women dj staff. James Taylor, Carole King,Junior Walker and the All Stars, Marvin Gay, Stevie Wonder, Ramsey Lewis and Wes Montgomery were played here.
