The JRPG Report

In a completely unexpected and welcome annoucement, Star Ocean is back! And coming next year to all platforms (sorry Switch.) During the most recent State of Play, the series I thought was dead, made a splash and left quite the impression. I'll detail everything we know as well as my impressions from the trailer.

Of course that wasn't the only news of the week. We have stories about Tales of Luminaria's release date, a new trailer for Triangle Strategy, lots of Tales news, the Blue Reflection 2nd Light demo, Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster release date, and the departure from Atlus of its main music composer. Plus lots more!

I'm back after a pleasant vacation and a not so pleasant trip to the dentist. A day late but never a dollar short here's your new podcast for the week. In this episode we have news for Monark's western release date and details about Atelier Sophie 2's new characters. Lots of Final Fantasy news with FF XIV's upcoming Endwalker expansion and a possible FFIV The After Years remaster? Some other fun stories in here too for Rune Factory 5, a new Neptunia game, and Monster Hunter sales milestones. Check out the video version on this podcast on Spotify and YouTube!

It's that time of year! When I take a much needed vacation and leave you all with a mailbag show. Only a few submissions this time but they were excellent questions. To fill some time at the end, I wanted to talk about the future of the podcast. Some exciting changes and developments are coming. Nothing is changing about this weekly audio version. But we want to create new content, including video, forums, and additional special episodes. All with you, the humble listener, at the center. I'll speak more in a few weeks when the first big development unfolds!

We were right this time. Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream will launch Feb 24 in Japan and the next day worldwide for PS4, PC, and Switch. I give all the details and wrap up our coverage of Tokyo Game Show 2021.

At the end of the podcast I'll share an interview with Sophie's director on the influences of this game, why she got a sequel, and the Ryza effect on the game. Also covered in this show: Relayer, Sin Chronicle, Blue Reflection Second Light, and the 20th Anniversary of Kingdom Hearts, with all titles coming to Switch soon via the Cloud. I share a few others headlines and outline the podcast release schedule with me on vacation next week. But fear not we have a fun mailbag show to hold you over until I return! I'm off to JRPG Island!

Oh man what a big show at just over an hour and packed full of JRPG goodies, news, and shenanigans. Not much in the way of surprised this year, but we did get new information and a ton of release dates.

At the end I'll outline what's happening the next few weeks. We've got the mailbag show coming up while I'm on vacation so think of some questions or submit them now to the email below. I tell you why I'm actually excited about Tales of Luminaria and all the Huge in Japan sale going on now on the PSN store.

What's your favorite Persona game? Atlus is celebrating 25 years of memories over the next few months. It's begun now with a special website launched along with merchandise and hopefully a new game. I'll go over what we know so far.

Seems like every major franchise is celebrating an anniversary lately. The Atelier series is also celebrating 25 years in May of next year with 6 new announcements, not all necessarily games. The first is coming in a week at TGS, more than likely Atelier Sophie 2.

Not a ton to talk about the week before TGS. Final Fantasy XIV released news and a new trailer ahead of its Endwalker expansion. Monster Hunter Rise will allow you change your mount into Rush from Mega Man soon! We go over the last of the lineup news before the show. Keep in mind next week's podcast will be on Friday to better cover the start of Tokyo Game Show 2021. Looking forward to a great event!

It's a jam packed and nearly hour long show this week full of information, rumors, and opinions. The latter two reserved for the end. Here's some of the game news we have: The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki, Tales of Arise and Monark. I'll give my thoughts on the opening hours of Arise, and wrap up the podcast with my thoughts on its DLC. We do have one rumor early in show: what Koei Tecmo's mystery title at TGS maybe, according to a new game register.

More Tokyo Game Show 2021 details and lineups have emerged, including Square Enix and Bandai Namco. Two cool features in particular are a part of the new system updates for Switch and PS5. I give my reaction to the games shown at the recent Playstation Showcase (sadly no JRPGs). And let's talk about the NVIDIA database leak. So many games on the list, I'll mention them all but focus on the ones that matter most to us, in particular Chrono Cross Remaster.

It's the perfect combination of short news week, and hectic personal week. That equals short podcast. The big news of the week is obviously the launch of Tales of Arise tomorrow. Will it live up to the hype?

There were a few stories to cover including a western release for Neptunia x Senran Kagura: Ninja Wars on October 26 in North America. I wasn't 100% sure we'd even get this game, let alone 6 weeks after its Japanese release. We've got a few mobile JRPG's to talk about, and there was a new trailer for SMT V. Disgaea celebrates 5 million games sold with a sale on its games so don't miss that. Not a ton else but there will just be weeks like this sometimes. Thanks for listening as always my friends.

Less than a month until TGS 2021, we have the outline of events for the show. I'll go down the list, highlight the big moments, and speculate what we might see. Always the highlight of the JRPG year, let's hope for a great event!

We've got news from SMT V about its characters and systems. Demon Gaze EXTRA has a release date, and surprise it's a worldwide one. Final Fantasy titles are coming to Playstation Now as FF XIII hits Xbox Gamepass. I've got first details about a new game coming to PC in Q1 2022: Rise of the Third Power. The retro looking title is another love letter to SNES JRPG's and looks very interesting.

Curious what exactly is in Prinny Presents NIS Classics Volume 1? I read a great article from Siliconera all about the two PS2 classics included. Lastly I have two interviews with the teams behind Tales of Luminaria and the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters. Leave us a 5 star review on Apple and I'll read it on an upcoming podcast! (or send your review of another provider to my email [email protected])

In a shocking move, Koei Tecmo has announced its bringing the remasters of Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX to Switch, PC, and iOS worldwide December 9, 2021. After a year of wondering, longtime fans can celebrate the series 25th anniversary with both games this year. I'll let you know everything we learned today, including how you can turn cd's into monsters now.

Gamescom is still going on, but really nothing JRPG related was announced. The biggest highlight was Lindsey Stirling's live performance of the Tales of Arise theme, which you can view on our YouTube channel. We had a few other Tales stories, but stick around to the end for my take on the demo after playing it last night.

Lots of trailers this week so you want to check them out or wait until our video podcast. I talk about Astria Ascending a bit, Rune Factory as it celebrates 25 years, what Tales of Luminaria really is, and a few figures you might want to save your paycheck for soon. Thanks for listening as always (sorry my throat was a bit dry today).
