Publisher's Summary:
Marcus Didius Falco is about to get involved in a nasty noir crime, involving gangsters, gladiators, and romance.
For Falco, a relaxed visit to his wife Helena's relatives in Britain suddenly turns serious. He and his family are staying in London when Falco is summoned to the scene of a murder. The victim, Verovolcus, was a renegade with ties to Roman crime magnates operating in London, but he was also close to King Togidubnus. So when he is discovered dead, stuffed headfirst down a well, a tricky diplomatic situation develops that Falco must defuse.
His investigation leads him into the seedy underbelly of London. There is a newly built amphitheater in town, one with female gladiators, but Falco soon realizes that the initially troublesome gladiators - including one from his own bachelor past - may just give him the edge he needs to solve Verovolcus' murder, as the gangsters are pursued back to the Italian town of Ostia for a final showdown.
Members Reviews:
Really enjoyed the developments of interpersonal relationships in this one
This book picked right where the last left off. Really enjoyed the developments of interpersonal relationships in this one. Fun to see gangsters in the ancient world and the return of some old characters, friend and foe alike.
A good yarn following on from the Bath House mystery
A good yarn following on from the Bath House mystery. Many characters from that novel turn up (literally) here. Albia gets more page time and is developing nicely, not too quickly but we know she is there. Reasonably accurate historically with the development of Londinium which is interesting to a visitor. As well many references to the Boudicca uprising and how it affected the colony. plenty of action as well with our usual dynamic duo, hoods, good soldiers, bad soldiers.
Well worth the read,
A Must for Flavia Albia Readers!
A must-read for anyone who reads the Flavia Albia series, as this is the book that introduces the character. She has a hard life to overcome, but with Falco and Helena she will ultimately manage. The introduction of protection rackets into ancient Britania is fascinating and somewhat inevitable, and the twists at the end come hard and fast. Featuring Petro as more of a main character than he's usually seen. An all round great read.
The Continuing Adventures of Falco
This is another in the Falco series and a continuance of the previous tale "The Body in the Bathhouse". Falco and family are still in Britian. They are now in Londinium visiting Helena's uncle and enjoying a well deserved rest before heading back to Rome. With Falco and his immediate family are his sister Maia and her children and Falco's old buddy, Petro. Thrown into this mix is the Governor of Britain, Frontius who is an old acquaintance of Falco (see Three Hands in the Fountain). Of course, things happen - there is a murder of some significance and Falco is called in to clean it up. As always there are a host of characters who provide vivid colour to the story and to the backdrop of a backwater colonial capital. The story is straight forward and not overly complex, however it is still enjoyable. There are several subplots that flavour the book, most of them focused about Petro. You also get to meet one of Falco's old girl friends.
