Pittsburgh Hip Hop & the Independent Music Industry: DJ CHEVY | The Kalaj Dame Podcast (E001)
Join acclaimed DJ and Pittsburgh Hip Hop pioneer, DJ Chevy, as he sits down with host Kalaj Dame for a real, unfiltered conversation about music, business, and surviving your independent grind. The Kalaj Dame Show explores the world of tastemakers, bootlegs, and product testing—from white labels to the art of DJing and the power of constructive criticism in your network. DJ Chevy breaks down why "artists are weird" and how to take advantage of that energy to make magic really happen — both in the studio and the boardroom.
We learn the history of DJ Chevy and what he has done for the Pittsburgh Hip Hop community. The two discuss why it’s vital to do your homework when meeting somebody and why to vet out every opportunity for risk and reward while adapting to any situation — even if the opportunity doesn’t seem right at first glance. During this episode, learn the truth about professionalism, why establishing your roles and responsibilities are so essential to any gig or project, and the importance of using business riders when booking acts.
The two go in on being prepared for costs, budgets, resources, and shortfalls, as well as always having backup plans in case the other side fails you. But most importantly — they point out — you need to stand firm on your price if you ever want to make it ahead in the industry, meaning charge accordingly for your expertise and additional services — and KNOW YOUR DEMOGRAPHICS — learning when to bow out when the gig just doesn't suit you. What your client wants might not be what the audience actually wants. So, avoid being a "Celebrated Jukebox" — your audience is out there, so don’t listen to those who say you’re too expensive. Know your value.
Every gig is a chance to either build or break your reputation. But there will always be 150 different opportunities to never get hired again. They talk about the power of association and explain how the Grind Hard DJs was the first branded DJ group in Pittsburgh. DJ Chevy goes on to suggest that independent artists should register their business ASAP and employ themselves if they want a shortcut to success. He breaks down fictitious names and trademarks, taxes, and protecting your brand from all liabilities — both physical and intellectual.
Chevy tells artists not to repeat themselves and that teamwork really does make the dream work — there is collective power in advocating for your community. He also explains why communication and building your skillsets are the key to mastering the game and why the basics are the key to building new lanes.
As Chevy says, "When you turn the lights on, roaches run." He believes that you should stop going above and beyond for those who don’t appreciate it. DON’T FORGET YOU ARE A BRAND, and to be a leader, you must take accountability for your actions. You’re not allowed to have excuses. Don’t be a victim of the atrophy of convenience — learn how to feed yourself and thrive in today’s microwave society.
The Kalaj Dame Podcast wraps up with insights on mentorship, social media adoption, revenue-sharing, and a thought experiment on doing what you love for 12 hours a day. The world evolves, but "horses are still here." Be authentic, be supportive, and think for yourself when it comes to AI and educated risks. Protect your brand. Don’t play the lottery.
From pricing and protecting your brand, to understanding demographics, teamwork, mentorship, and hip hop — this is a masterclass for all creatives and entrepreneurs who want to achieve success and longevity — and know that relying on luck is definitely not an option!
Whether you’re an artist, DJ, producer, or just business-minded—this episode is about doing it right... the first time!
