In 2018, the morning after Vancouver’s municipal election, Niki Sharma posted: “The unbearable whiteness of local elections results.” Today she is British Columbia’s Attorney General and Deputy Premier, the minister responsible for the protection and promotion of human rights in this province, and she is on the ballot in Vancouver-Hastings on October 24. New York's medical aid in dying law took effect August 5, 2026. A care-coordination business was ready for it. Quiĕtus connects terminally ill New Yorkers with physicians, coordinates the certifications, prescribing and mental-health evaluation, prepares families, can have clinicians in the home on the day of death, and helps with cremation and funeral arrangements. It charges an administrative fee; clinicians bill separately.

October 16 A Nova Scotia church offered a free baked potato at its MAiD info night
A church in Nova Scotia advertised a MAiD information night: staff from the provincial MAiD program explaining eligibility and process, plus a baked potato with all the toppings and a beverage. I posted the flyer on September 28. This is why it matters far more than a potato. This is not about one parish. It is about how a country gets comfortable. You soften the language, you put it inside trusted institutions, and eventually it shares a flyer with dinner. Canada spent years arguing about safeguards and stopped asking whether we should be doing this at all. If you live in a US state debating the same law, this is the road.

October 15 Australia sent the drug home. Someone it wasn't written for took it...
A person in Victoria, Australia was approved to take an end-of-life prescription at home. They died in hospital without taking it. In the days after, their partner is believed to have used that same prescription. The state's Review Board says the program continues to operate safely. I disagree, and this episode is why. Victoria's own law gives the nominated contact person up to 15 days after the death to return an unused prescription. The matter has been referred to the coroner. I am not going to invent facts that are not there. The known facts are enough. This matters far beyond Australia. Canada, the United Kingdom, and US states including New York are running or debating the same model. Once the prescription leaves the pharmacy, the paperwork stops controlling who can reach it.

October 12 The Crown asked for four years . The judge sentenced him to house arrest.
On February 11, 2022, a Dodge Ram travelling roughly 90 km/h in a 50 zone crossed the centre line near Oakland, Ontario and hit a Mitsubishi head on. Twelve-year-old Sierra Beverly was killed. Her mother Naomi survived with multiple fractures and an acquired brain injury and still requires care. Investigators found no evidence of braking.This month, Ontario Court of Justice Justice Gethin Edward sentenced Darris James Wilson to two years of house arrest with a GPS monitor, rejecting the Crown's request for four years in a penitentiary. The judge's reasons expressly considered Gladue factors, including the colonization of Six Nations and its effects on Wilson's life. Sierra's family called the sentence inadequate.

On October 7, 2026, Justice Minister Sean Fraser and Health Minister Marjorie Michel announced the federal government intends to table legislation this fall keeping people whose sole condition is mental illness out of MAiD indefinitely.
