At the start of the covid19 pandemic, the Government of Kenya through the Central Bank of Kenya, initiated plans that would help kenyans' in the fight against corona and one of those plans was to lower the amount of cash based transactions and encourage people to use mobile money. Banks and other financial institutions such as Safaricom were given certain directions that would help Kenyans avoid cash based transactions. Safaricom and the CBK agreed that they would forfeit transaction charges for sending money amounting to 1000 shillings. In this episode we discuss how safaricom later went to CBK to complain that Kenyans were misusing the waiver and wanted kenyans to be subjected to only having 5 transactions amounting to 1000 in a day.
