The Key to Defence in Spiritual Warfare

Ephesians 6:17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

We are moving along in our series, Armor of God: War Torn to Battle Born, and we'll be spending some time this week looking at the Sword of the Spirit.

We are now in the final piece of the Armor of God, and it's the only offensive weapon mentioned. All the other aspects were defensive, but Paul here mentions that the people of God are to be on guard with the Sword of the Spirit.

In the Greco-Roman context, these swords were short, and they were primarily for hand-to-hand combat. What this means, as Paul has been saying, is that the real enemy is the one that comes to steal, kill, and destroy and that our fight is not with flesh and blood.

The way that Jesus combatted the enemy in His temptation was by using Scripture! It is so important for the people of God to be armored with the Sword of the Spirit, to be people that know the Word (and better yet, to be known by the Word). When we continue to abide in the power of Jesus, remaining in His might, then we will continue to be victorious against the schemes of the enemy.
