April 27, 2026 Understanding the Kingdom of God
Matthew 3:1-2 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
We are now entering the main content of the Gospel of Matthew: the Kingdom of God.
As John the Baptist prepares the way for the Messiah, he proclaims, "Repent for the Kingdom of heaven has come near!" Quite literally, John is telling the people to change how they think about the rule and reign of God and begin to get ready for how Jesus is going to reveal the ways of the Kingdom.
As Isaiah reminds us, "His ways are not our ways." There is a holiness, a set-apartness, to the Kingdom of God, and the plight of humanity has always tried to put God in a box, to domesticate Him and make Him easier to understand. But we need to repent, change our thinking, to allow God to be God and to show us the real rule and reign of King Jesus.

April 20, 2026 Trusting God While Facing Opposition
Matthew 2:3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him...
Last week, we began our study in Matthew, and we'll be going line-by-line through this incredible book to see how Jesus is King!
This week, we'll be looking at Jesus' early life. It was right as He was born that He experienced opposition, and Herod, because of his insecurities and jealousies, was ready to kill Jesus. In order to cast a wider net, Herod actually killed young boys two and under, very similarly to what Pharaoh did in Exodus, and even before Jesus did anything in the Kingdom or for the Kingdom, He experienced resistance.
Often, we look at opposition as a sign that the Lord is trying to steer us away from that direction, but more often than not, it's these attacks that are greater invitations to trust in the Lord to lead us and guide us. Whenever we make strides in the Kingdom, there will always be opposition. And our response is not to shirk back in fear, but to listen to God as He takes us where we need to be!

Matthew 1:1 This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham...

We are beginning our yearlong study in the Gospel of Matthew and looking at the great heritage of Jesus Christ! Matthew spends a considerable amount of time going through the names of people that went before Jesus, reminding his readers that the Jesus thread goes all the way back to the beginning.

Matthew's audience is predominantly Jewish, so he looks at how Jesus fulfills the Messianic promises and prophecies and how Jesus is the seed of Abraham. This is a big deal! Because of the covenant, this is how God fulfilled His promises of blessings to His people, and Matthew, more than the other Gospel writers, wants his readers to know that in Jesus, God is King!

Matthew 28:6 He is not here. He is risen as he has said!

It is Easter Weekend! Tonight, we'll start by reflecting on the Cross of Christ, remembering what Jesus did for us 2,000 years ago. We'll have two service options at 6 and 7:30 pm.

And then we'll wait during Holy Saturday, the space between Friday and Sunday, as God does the impossible. Even if it feels like He's not working, God is sometimes the most active even when we don't see Him.

Because that's what the Easter promise is all about!

March 29, 2026 The Purpose of Global Missions
Acts 1:8 "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

We introduced our last set of values, local and global, last week by looking at our call to grow where we are planted. And this week, we're going to unpack the other side of the value of being globally minded.

As Christ ascended into heaven, He told the disciples to wait until they received the Holy Spirit before doing anything. And many of us know the story where the disciples prayed in the Upper Room and were filled with tongues of fire speaking many different languages.

The story of the church, or better yet the story of God's people, has always been about "blessed to be a blessing." God chose Abram out of his people, set him apart, blessed him, and his descendants blessed those around them. This continues all the way throughout the Old Testament: the people of God are to not just live set apart from their communities but are called to witness to the world around them. And Jesus carries this mandate with His disciples, a la the Great Commission, as He sent them out to carry the Kingdom of God to the world around them.

In Acts, they go everywhere because God's Spirit and presence is sending them to go out. It was never meant to be a holy huddle or to be kept to themselves, but it was all about making the Table of Fellowship longer. At the Vineyard, we will carry this value out by partnering with global missions, working with organizations that are reaching unreached people groups with the Love of Jesus, spreading the Good News of the Kingdom to the ends of the earth.

March 22, 2026 The Importance of Local Missions
Luke 10:29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

We are introducing our last set of values dealing with our missional focus of being both local and global.

In Luke 10, Jesus has just sent out the 72. This was a continuation of Jesus' mission in sending out the Twelve in the previous chapter. We arrive at a very familiar passage of Scripture that many of us learned in Sunday School: The Good Samaritan. Here, Jesus answers the question, "Who is my neighbor?" Not to get too deep into the socio-political context of the passage, though of course we will get there during this sermon, there was underlying tension between the Jews and the Samaritans for a litany of reasons. But they were literal neighbors, both in proximity and in practice, and Jesus uses the Samaritan as an archetype for being missional.

The religious folk pass over the man in need, but it's the Samaritan who shows the love of God to this man in need. He recognizes his situation, and he takes care of him, thus fulfilling the Law of God. All of the Ten Commandments can be summed up this way: love God and love others. And sometimes these "others" are right next door to us! At the Vineyard, we value local missions, reaching the people in the world who live right next to us. We will seek to partner with churches, organizations, and ministries to reach the people who are near to us!

March 15, 2026 The Boldness of Jesus
Mark 5:9 Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”

Last week, we introduced the third set of values: Compassion and Deliverance. We talked about how these are two aspects of ministering to the hurt and broken. We recognize the humanity, the need of the person, and we also recognize that there's an underlying spiritual aspect to the brokenness.

As Paul mentions in Ephesians, we do not wrestle against flesh and blood... In this passage in Mark, Jesus confronts a man who has been demonized so long that he now has to live on the outskirts of town. Jesus, full of compassion, meets the man and casts the demons out of him! It's an incredible story, full of so much insight, but the main point is this: as Christ followers, we are going to encounter all different kinds of opposition in the unseen realm, and we are called to be bold and courageous in liberating captives from their bondage.

To continue Jesus' works, we are going to find ourselves in situations where we're going to have to be bold and call people out of brokenness. And as we mentioned last week, we are partnering with Jesus in bringing wholeness to the hurting world!

Matthew 9:36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

Moving along in our Rooted and Rising series, we are now looking at the Value of being people who continue the works of Jesus by being compassionate.

We are now exploring the next set of values with compassion and deliverance, and these are two sides of the same coin in the ministry of Jesus. All throughout the Gospels, Jesus fed the crowds physically and spiritually. He fed the 5,000 while also bringing healing and wholeness to those who needed it later in Matthew 14. It's always both-and for Jesus:

He saw their physical needs along with their spiritual brokenness. And as we continue Jesus' works, we are called to do the same. All too often, people will focus on one aspect of healing, either just the physical or just the spiritual, but Jesus went after both.
At the Franklin Vineyard, we will do the same!

John 15:9-10 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love..."

Moving along in our Rooted and Rising series, we are now looking at the Value of being people in the Love of God! Last week, we introduced the idea of being people rooted in the Truth of the Gospel of Christ and how He invites us into full discipleship, to "pick up our cross and follow Him." And now we're seeing the other side of the coin by discussing the Love of God. It is God's love that invites us into fellowship with Himself and one another.

The Love of God is all about salvation, that God hasn't counted our sins against us but comes into our muck and mire and brokenness to rescue us from darkness. That God doesn't hold our sins against us but comes into our world to redeem us from the curse is LOVE. Love is relational. It's powerful. And it's about doing life together.

From Genesis to Revelation, the story of God and His people is about relational healing and walking in the wholeness and fullness that Jesus invites us into through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit.

February 22, 2026 The Doctrine of Sanctification
John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Moving along in our Rooted and Rising series, we are now looking at the Value of being people of the Truth!

All throughout human history, truth was something worth seeking out. It's what began most philosophical pursuits, and especially in the biblical times, truth was objective. It was God Himself! But we live in an era where truth has become relativized and subjective with your truth versus my truth.

Whether that happened in the post-WWII context, or more recently in the day of AI and social media deepfakes, there's a rising suspicion in what is true and what is good. However, as people of the Word and Spirit, we believe that Truth isn't something that *we* get to determine but has already been decided for us in Jesus Christ. He is, after all, the way, the truth, and the life.

Truth is about applying the principles of the Gospel in real time, in real life, in what many people call "sanctification." All are able to receive the Gospel message in love, and we are invited to walk out this truth by applying the Blood of Jesus Christ to all aspects of our Christian lives.
