In this powerful episode of The Keys To Life™, host Algie Mosley sits down with Robert “Bobby” Woods, a man whose extraordinary journey proves that where your story begins does not have to determine where it ends. Bobby is proof that when you discover who you really are, that's when you learn to Be It Forward!
Growing up in Berkeley, Robert lost his mother at sixteen and found himself surrounded by gangs, drugs, and choices that could easily have led to prison or an early grave. Then came a terrifying 48-hour LSD experience in which he envisioned his own funeral and saw himself behind bars. It became his wake-up call!
Robert chose a different road.
That road led him to Merritt College, where Professor Melvin Newton, older brother of Huey Newton, recognized leadership potential in him. Robert went from student body vice president to president and began discovering that the same energy once pulling him toward destruction could instead be used to build, organize, inspire, and serve.
His journey continued at UC Davis, where he became president of the Black Student Union and helped establish traditions such as Black Family Day and Wine and Jazz Event, creating spaces for Culture, Community, and Belonging.
Another meaningful part of Robert's journey was becoming a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The fraternity's principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service reflected the man he was becoming: someone who understood that education can create freedom, brotherhood can provide accountability and belonging, and true success means reaching back to help somebody else rise.
For Robert, Sigma became more than letters. It represented brotherhood, mentorship, responsibility, service, and legacy.
Robert also shares the importance of family, including advice from his father that ultimately contributed to a marriage spanning more than four decades and a family that includes two accomplished beautiful daughters.
His professional journey became equally remarkable. An interest in financial literacy eventually led Robert into finance, where he would manage hundreds of millions of dollars a day at a major pension fund. He later wrote a book to help other's understand the importance of finance called "A Beginner's Guide to Wealth Building" to help others understand money and take greater control of their financial futures. But beneath all the accomplishments is a much deeper message.
Who are you and who were you created to become?
Robert reflects on how many young people are pushed toward someone else's definition of success without ever being asked what they truly want from life. A personality assessment helped him recognize that his natural gifts were aligned with finance rather than medicine, changing the trajectory of his future.
Robert's story reminds us that sometimes changing your life begins with changing your environment. Sometimes freedom begins with education. Sometimes discovering your future begins with understanding yourself.
And sometimes...
One courageous and powerful decision to change direction can rewrite the rest of your story, called Life.
This is more than an interview. It is a story of redemption, brotherhood, education, self-discovery, financial empowerment, service, and legacy.
The young man who once faced the possibility of prison or death ultimately discovered leadership, family, purpose, financial success, and a responsibility to help others. His past became not a prison...but a platform.
And perhaps that is the greatest lesson of all:
Your past may explain where you've been but it does not get to decide where you're going.
You learn.
You grow.
You rise.
And then...
you reach back.
🔑 His Three Keys to Life
1. Ask Yourself: “What Do I Want to Be?”
Don't allow others to write your life's destination for you. Discover your gifts, interests, passions, and the path that genuinely fits who you are.
2. Understand the Power and Value of Money
Financial knowledge creates choices, security, opportunity, and freedom. Learn how money works early, control it wisely, and don't allow it to control you.
3. Know Yourself
Self-awareness can save years of traveling down the wrong road. Robert encourages young people to understand their personality, strengths, and natural abilities so they can pursue a life aligned with who they truly are.
And woven through all three keys is another lesson:
Don't make the journey alone.
Find mentors. Find teachers. Find people who will challenge you, believe in you, and help you Rise. Because sometimes one of life's greatest keys isn't something you carry in your hand...it's the brother standing beside you when it's time to unlock the next door. GOMAB!
