Reducing food waste by extending the life of fruit and veg - Produce Mate - Dagan Kay

Did you know that UK households waste an average of  £700 per year on food waste?

In addition, did you know that 40% of all food produced in the USA is sent directly to landfill?

This is a HUGE waste of resources and a major contributor to global pollution.

On the show this week, we spoke with Dagan Kay, Founder & CEO of Produce Mate. We discussed how they are on a mission to give your fruit and vegetables the life they deserve and their successful raise on kickstarter - e.fnd.to/producemate 

What does sustainability mean to you?

Living within our means. Shedding the consumerist illusions that A) we have an endless pool of resources and B) "Grow or die". 

In business, I think that framing capital as a powerful tool for change rather than as an ultimate end goal has proven really impactful for me. 

What's one small change listeners can do to immediately have a positive impact on the world?

In terms of lifestyle change, simply eating less beef is one of the best things you can do for the climate. 

In general though, I believe in thoughtfulness and kindness. Smile at people, gas people up, give what you can.  

Which business owner do you admire that is doing good things for combating climate change?

I'm a Patagonia nut. I believe very much in their processes (did you hear they're going completely carbon neutral by 2025?! Amazing), and I think they're really at the forefront of treating their people as well as possible.

What's one sustainable product you really love?

I put "competitors" in quotations because I believe that it's going to take a really huge fundamental shift in business to make a measurable impact on food waste and the climate more broadly. We can't be focused purely on competition and growth. We need to work together.

What does sustainability mean to you?

To me, sustainability means living our lives and running our businesses in ways that can last—not just during our lifetimes, but for future generations as well. That means operating in ways that are able to regenerate and maintain a certain level of being, whether it comes to financials, supply chains, or the planet at large.

What's one small change listeners can do to immediately have a positive impact on the world?

Educate yourself. There's so much information out there when it comes to sustainability, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and just shut down completely. But the best thing you can do is to learn more about it, because only then will you be able to internalize and really start to contribute in positive ways.

Tim Brown and Joey Zwillinger of Allbirds for their transparency with their processes, innovative use of materials, and efforts to go carbon-neutral
