Mark's initial claim about Jesus is that He is the Christ, the Son of God. However, throughout Mark's account, no human ever understands Jesus' true identity. Mark structures the crucifixion scene with the goal of demonstrating how Jesus became the Christ and was finally identified as, the Son of God.
