In the early 19th century the city of Jerusalem was awash with apocalyptic American cowboys, Russian peasants hermits and famous book authors, like the guy who wrote Moby Dick, all in search of religious redemption and revival in the Kingdom of Heaven city. Instead they found a crumbling, donkey trampled, dust filled, Middle Eastern backwater filled with pistol carrying monks and ferocious Bedouin tribes.
The devastating disappointment that soon followed was known as 'Jerusalem Syndrome'- an over inflated vision of the cities magical and messianic properties that for some caused a complete mental collapse, others a spiritual awakening rooted in biblical dreams of grandeur hat (may) just still continue to this day.
