Diverse, Surreal, Beautiful Speculative Fiction Collection
When I heard A.C. Wise, of The Ultra-Fabulous Glitter Squadron Saves the World Again (previously reviewed here) had a new collection out, I was quick to snatch up the ebook. This short story collection is even better than her first, a weird fiction/speculative melange with shades of Karen Russell, Kelly Link, and Judith Gorog (did anyone read Please Do Not Touch and end up with weird dreams forever?) Unique to her stories is a sense of hope, completion, and rightness--the good might not prevail yet, but Wise does not doubt that one day it might.
The Kissing Booth Girl has lots of queer rep, and identities as diverse as its settings: girls in love building a time machine to write their own happily ever afters over and over, an undersea foundling defying an order of aquatic nuns to bring salvation to the drowned dead. What happens if you move into a home meant for a witch (and her cat) several lifetimes over. Vengeful robots and golems, tender aliens and ghosts. Wise's writing is fluid, descriptive, and paints delightful, horrifying pictures of what could be, while reassure the readers of their worth, the stories of their purpose. An absolutely delightful collection, and I can't wait to read more of what A.C. Wise writes and recommends.
Literary, sexy, folkloric masterpiece
One of the best collections of the year. Aside from the variety of backdrops and concepts, Wise creates truly unique characters with full lives that you can't help imagining even after you finish reading. They're raw and real and sad and wonderful. The book is full of incredible sentences, observations, and imagery, and has a colorful cast of LGBTQ+ characters. I have a student who bemoaned the absence of characters like her in steampunk, sci-fi, and contemporary lit. I'm showing her this book the first chance I get.
A treasure trove of stories
Last year I read and reviewed A.C. Wiseâs The Ultra Fabulous Glitter Squadron Saves the World Again and I loved it. It was fun, camp, and utterly delightful. So when Wise approached me about reviewing her latest collection, The Kissing Booth Girl and Other Stories, I agreed with alacrity, as I was keen to read more of her work. And while this collection is perhaps less exuberant than the previous one, it is a deeply thoughtful and thought-provoking set of stories, which while spanning the breadth of the speculative genre in space and time, all deal with identity and agency.
The stories debate identity, in the broadest sense of the word, as a construct â whether a societal construct, a philosophical one, or a literal one â and whether choice can ever be a part of that.
