5 things you didn’t know about cat behavior…

😽. Rubbing

When your cat rubs her head on you, it shows affection and her ownership with you. This behavior is also called "bunting."

👂. Ear-itation

If you see your cat moving her ears back and forth or sideways, it's time to slowly back up. This behavior communicates anxiety and anger. On the other hand, if the ears are positioned uptight, it means she is alert for an upcoming threat.

⌨️. Interfering in your work

When your cat disturbs you while you are using your computer or phone, it means it is getting jealous of it and wants your attention. Attend it and give it some toys to play with so it won't feel ignored.

😼. Eating non-food items

If your cat is chewing on non-food items such as plastic, clothes, metal, wool, or inedible plants, it might have mineral deficiencies, anemia, or genetic problems. On the other hand, there's a possibility that it's doing it out of boredom.

👀. Cat eyes

A simple cat stare is to get your attention, but a constant gaze means it is highly alert. Do not look directly into its eyes because it will take this as a challenge for a fight.

Liver disease can often be tricky to diagnose. Your vet may need to test blood and urine samples and perform liver function tests such as comparing blood collected before and after a meal. Ultrasound or x-rays of the abdomen can help show any liver abnormalities. Liver biopsy can also get very useful information about exactly what the condition is, allowing for more effective and targeted treatment.

The choice of treatment depends very much on your vet’s diagnosis. Acute liver disease, often requires hospitalization, intravenous fluids (a drip) and sometimes feeding via a tube if your cat is not eating.

😿

There are many medications for both acute and chronic liver disease patients. Depending on the specific condition, your vet will choose the most appropriate ones to help your cat. But whatever the condition, changing your cat’s diet will be an essential part of managing their liver disease.

Liver disease can be either long-term (chronic) or start suddenly (acute).

😿 Cats with chronic liver disease, often show vague, non-specific signs like loss of appetite, lethargy, and weight loss.

🙀 The signs of acute liver disease are often much more obvious. They can include vomiting and diarrhea, jaundice (yellowing of the skin, the whites of the eyes and gums), abdominal swelling, and excessive thirst and urination. Animals with acute disease may also have abdominal pain and fever.

Cats with liver disease often drool excessively. Cats with very severe liver disease may build up large amounts of toxins in the blood. These can affect the brain, leading to disorientation, confusion, and seizures. This is known as “hepatic encephalopathy“.

There are many reasons why your cat’s liver function can be affected. These include:

🦠 Infection by viruses or bacteria.

☠️ Intoxications (poisons).

😣 Hepatitis (liver inflammation) often of unknown cause. This sometimes leads to scarring (cirrhosis).

♋️ Tumours.

🧬 Genetic problems in some breeds.

🩸 Inherited problems with the livers blood vessels (portosystemic shunts).

😾 Fatty liver disease (hepatic lipidosis).

🐈‍⬛ Inherited problems are most common in younger cats. Other forms of liver disease are more likely in older cats.
