Beren McKay of Pepperwool joins Bob "The Knife Junkie" DeMarco on Episode 551 of The Knife Junkie Podcast (https://theknifejunkie.com/551).
McKay spent 12 years designing knives, multitools, and other things for SOG and, in 2017, was a frontrunner of the change in the company focused on making quality products that were worth buying.
When SOG was sold to GSM, the new owners were not interested in continuing that vision. Beren and SOG parted ways, and Beren set out to make his own brand so he could continue his work making innovative and solid knives.
Over 15 years as a knife designer, Beren handled and admired countless designs—but too often, he found carrying them was a compromise. Inspired to make a more carryable knife, Beren took a deep dive into this problem, and his solution was a family of knives called MERINO.
The Merino MM, or Micro-sized Manual, is the first knife in this family. It is optimized for ultimate carry comfort, always there but never in the way. It is large enough to be a useful blade but not so small that it is a novelty toy. It features an ambidextrous bar lock with a kick deploy, full metal liners, and a razor-sharp S35VN blade.
The name Pepperwool captures two ideas that Beren strives for in his work: innovation and reliability.

Custom knife maker and knife designer Dirk Pinkerton joins Bob "The Knife Junkie" DeMarco on Episode 549 of The Knife Junkie Podcast (https://theknifejunkie.com/549).
Dirk began making knives seriously in 2005 after a lifetime interest in knives. His design philosophy comes from observing his father’s knife usage. Dirk makes and designs straight-forward, purpose-driven knives.
Dirk’s experience in the private security world, training with LEOs and SWAT, gave him an understanding of how knives were looked upon as tools and weapons. He was mentored by Darrel Ralph, who taught him the strict discipline and the freedom of expression of knifemaking.
Aside from a thriving custom knife-making career, Pinkerton folder designs, as well as fixed, are in production with companies like Kizer, Kansept, Assymetric, and more. Under his own shingle, Dirk designs knives for manufacture by the world's top companies, two of which are favorites in the Knife Junkie’s collection.

Ken Brock of Brock Blades joins Bob "The Knife Junkie" DeMarco on Episode 545 of The Knife Junkie Podcast (https://theknifejunkie.com/545).
Ken's first knives were the clueless efforts of a high school kid in shop class. In 2003, like many knife makers, he sold part of his knife and gun collection to buy his first grinder.
Ken was a law enforcement officer with no interest in working a side security job, like most of his fellow officers. As he continued to develop as a knifemaker, he began to make kydex sheaths for other makers.
In 2021, after 30 years of service in law enforcement, Ken retired to focus on making blades full time.
