What things make for an effective coach or instructor? Are learning styles really a thing? Do videos of mistakes and bad outcomes really help us learn? Justin Wageman has a Phd. in Education and shares some pretty interesting insights, studies and theories about coaching, instructing, progression and learning.
In this episode we have a good old fashioned jaw sesh. Just a bunch of jibber jabber, tittle tattle and gum flappin'. We have fun talking about whatever is on our minds, from the recent world competition in Norway to helping out newly licensed skydivers and a little bit of everything in between.
Jim Cowan may have more canopy wraps and entanglements than any other skydiver on the planet! He started skydiving when he was 16 years old and now has +24,000 jumps. In this episode we discuss canopy relative work, wraps and entanglements, how to get in to CRW safely, and lessons learned over 45 years of skydiving. Oh, and we hear a couple of pretty crazy stories!
We discuss a few tips for coaching and learning head down, how boogies have changed over the years and what makes a good boogie. We also chat with Andrea about a serious injury that left her as a paraplegic, her skydiving comeback and how she maintains such a positive outlook on life.
JRuss and Tex go over the ins and outs of exit order, how to maximize separation and why the first few seconds of a skydive might have more effect on group separation than you would think. We discuss why it's so difficult to create hard and fast rules for exit order, some of the varying factors we should all consider and why movement groups shouldn't necessarily always go first. We also dig into some of the intricacies of leading movement jumps and why leading and organizing is truly a bigger responsibility than most of us have ever considered.
JRuss shares a story of a recent in-air collision he had with another skydiver. We talk about the value of traveling the world, experiencing other cultures and appreciating other perspectives. Finally, we watch a harrowing video of a malfunction from one of our listeners. It was truly a near-death experience and a miracle he is still alive. High pull with insane line twists, diving and spinning canopy resulting in temporary blackout, a cut-away, reserve handle pull with NO RESERVE, an AAD Fire and a rough landing through the trees. Glad you're still with us Nic.
We discuss South African Biltong, altimeters and jumping with an audible, we review a listener video and give some coaching on leading angle jumps, JRuss shares some tips on canopy accuracy and we talk about why it's important to always jump with a phone (just make sure it's in a zippered pocket :).
We review a listener video of a pretty hairy canopy collision, talk about humility and learning from others, and JRuss gives us his personal checklist for planning a safe angle jump and orienting new flyers to movement.
We discuss the Dunning Kruger Effect, what it is, how it shows up in skydiving and how to deal with it in others and yourself.
In this episode we discuss SDC Core's team training regimen and get some tips on how to prep for competition. We also go into depth on head up exits and how to launch them successfully and we talk about what it's like to be on a world record vertical jump.
