Today, we share an excerpt of a piece written by Joel Hancock in 1990, and published in the Winter 1991 edition of The Mailboat, titled “What Happened to the Skiffs?” This written history shows change through skiffs, a boat that was versatile and important to the families and crowds Down East, but is now rarely used. Through this, we see the ways in which change works - for better or worse - but also how we can cherish our memories from the past and carry them into the future.

Happy New Year, folks! With 2026 ahead, we want to take a moment and look back to the past. This week, we share accounts of several Down East communities, written by the children of these communities in 1990-91. These accounts remind us of what makes Down East such a special place.

This week, we continue our conversation with Emma Rose Guthrie. She talks the circus that used to come through Harkers Island, local legends, the Island’s bridges, history, and her family heritage. 

In this first part of our conversation with Emma Rose Guthrie, she reflects on her family and life with her husband. Despite difficult times after the Korean War, her love for the people in her life shines brightly, so listen in and enjoy as Emma Rose shares her memories with us. 

Continuing our conversation with Heber, we hear about the Coast Guard, his work on the Ferry giving tours to the Cape, and the history he’s learned along the way. Listen in as he shares his vast knowledge on the Cape Lookout Lighthouse and how it has become the beautiful Down East landmark we know today.

In the first part of this conversation with Heber Guthrie, we hear about the importance of Down East heritage in his life. Something that brought him and his brother together - boat-building - was also something he could share with the community, as he did when he worked on a boat-building heritage project with the local youth.
