  • The Sports Betting Trap: How DraftKings, FanDuel & “Free Bets” Keep You Gambling

Are sportsbooks giving you free money, or giving you another reason to gamble?

Sports betting is everywhere. From NFL broadcasts and celebrity endorsements to gambling influencers, bonus bets, and nonstop sportsbook promotions, betting has become part of mainstream sports culture. But what happens when the same companies advertising responsible gambling are also offering incentives designed to keep customers coming back?

In this eye-opening episode of The Last Bet, host Ryan Stewart takes a hard look at the sports betting industry, including DraftKings, FanDuel, VIP loyalty programs, and the psychology behind so-called "risk-free" bets.

Drawing from his personal experience with gambling addiction and recovery, Ryan examines how sportsbook marketing can encourage repeat betting, normalize gambling among younger generations, and make walking away increasingly difficult for people struggling with compulsive gambling.

    IN THIS EPISODE:

🎰 The Truth About Free Bets: Why a $100 bonus bet isn't the same as getting $100 back, and how promotional offers can encourage you to chase your losses.

🏈 The Normalization of Sports Gambling: How betting advertisements, influencers, and constant exposure are shaping the next generation of sports fans.

📱 The Psychology Behind Sportsbook Apps: How limited-time promotions, odds boosts, loyalty rewards, and easy access can encourage habitual gambling.

💰 Inside DraftKings' VIP Programs: Ryan discusses a 2026 ProPublica investigation that raised serious questions about personalized gambling incentives and customer protection.

🧠 Gambling Addiction vs. Corporate Responsibility: Where personal accountability ends, where industry responsibility begins, and why both matter.

🚫 Protecting Your Recovery: Practical ways to reduce gambling triggers, block sportsbook promotions, use self-exclusion tools, and stop chasing money you've already lost.

    THE BIG QUESTION:

When a company profits every time you place another bet, how much responsibility should it have to recognize when someone needs to stop?

This episode isn't about claiming everyone who gambles will develop an addiction. It's about understanding the marketing, recognizing the warning signs, and questioning whether existing safeguards adequately protect vulnerable customers.

Because a bonus bet isn't free money. A promotional offer doesn't erase your losses. And you don't owe a sportsbook another bet.

Whether you're struggling with gambling addiction, rebuilding your life in recovery, concerned about a loved one, or raising children in a world saturated with sports betting advertisements, this conversation matters.

  • How to Stay Gambling-Free When Gambling Is Everywhere

Quitting gambling is one thing. Staying gambling-free in a world where betting ads, sportsbooks, odds, parlays, and casino promotions are everywhere is another.

In this episode of The Last Bet, Ryan Stewart breaks down practical, real-world strategies for staying away from gambling outside of recovery meetings. From deleting betting apps and blocking gambling websites to cleaning up your social media, protecting your finances, changing your relationship with sports, and building a plan for when urges hit, this episode is focused on action, not theory.

Ryan also talks about why relying on willpower alone can be a dangerous strategy, why you should stop testing yourself around gambling, and why long-term recovery requires replacing what gambling once gave you, whether that was excitement, escape, distraction, or something to look forward to.

You may not be able to eliminate every sportsbook commercial, billboard, betting line, or gambling trigger from your life. But you can create more distance between yourself and the next bet. Every barrier you put in place creates something valuable: time to let the urge pass and make a different decision.

If you’re trying to quit sports betting, online gambling, casino gambling, or compulsive gambling, this episode gives you specific steps you can start using today.

The goal isn’t to prove you’re stronger than gambling. The goal is to stop gambling and build a life where gambling no longer controls you.

  • Nobody Knew: The Hidden Reality of My Gambling Addiction

Nobody knew how bad Ryan’s gambling had gotten.

    And that was by design.

He still went to work. Paid the bills. Took care of his family. From the outside, his life looked completely normal.

Inside his head was a different story.

The bets. The losses. The chasing. The constant checking. The obsession with getting even. And the carefully constructed explanations that made it easier to keep telling himself he was fine.

In this episode of The Last Bet, Ryan opens up about what it was really like to live with a gambling addiction that almost nobody could see.

He breaks down how gambling slowly went from entertainment to something that occupied more and more of his mental space, why being “functional” convinced him his gambling wasn’t that serious, and how chasing losses created a cycle where both winning AND losing became reasons to place another bet.

Ryan also gets into something that doesn’t get talked about enough: the double life of hidden gambling addiction.

There was the person everyone else saw, working, providing, traveling, handling responsibilities and showing up for life.

Then there was the person inside his head constantly thinking:

    What’s the next bet?
    What’s the score?
    How much am I down?
    How do I get even?

Because gambling doesn’t only take money.

    It can take your attention.
    Your presence.
    Your peace.
    Your time.

And sometimes secrecy isn’t protecting you.

    It’s protecting the gambling.

Ryan asks one question throughout this episode that may be uncomfortable, but worth answering:

If the people closest to you knew everything about your gambling, every bet, every deposit, every loss, every chase, would you still think you were fine?

You don’t have to lose your house, your career, your relationship, or everything you’ve built before deciding gambling is taking too much from you.

Sometimes the fact that you’re working so hard to hide it is telling you something.

  • You Don’t Miss Gambling. You Miss the Rush.

Do you actually miss gambling, or do you miss the rush it gave you?

Football season can be one of the hardest times of year for anyone struggling with sports betting or gambling addiction. The games are everywhere, but so are the odds, parlays, player props, live bets, betting apps, prediction markets, and constant talk about the next “lock.”

In this episode of The Last Bet, Ryan Stewart gets real about something he had to recognize in his own gambling recovery: he didn’t actually miss gambling. He missed the action, anticipation, uncertainty, and rush.

After years of attaching betting to sports, simply watching a football game could feel boring. Gambling had conditioned him to believe the game itself wasn’t enough. There needed to be money riding on it.

Ryan breaks down the cycle that keeps so many sports bettors trapped:

    • Why winning can make you want to gamble again
    • Why losing can make you want to gamble again
    • How betting changes the way you experience sports
    • Why normal life can initially feel “boring” after gambling
    • How nostalgia can make you remember the rush while forgetting the consequences
    • Why gambling urges don’t have to become gambling actions
    • How to protect your recovery during football season
    • What it feels like to finally watch sports without a point spread controlling your mood

One of the biggest questions in this episode is simple:

If winning doesn’t make you stop and losing doesn’t make you stop, what exactly are you chasing?

For Ryan, the answer was the rush.

Ryan hasn’t placed a bet since May 20, 2023. Today, he can watch football without needing money riding on the outcome, without constantly checking odds, and without spending Monday trying to recover financially or emotionally from the weekend.

That may not provide the same adrenaline.

    That’s the point.

If football season is triggering your urge to gamble, you don’t necessarily have to stop loving sports. But you may need to change how you experience them while you protect your recovery.

    An urge isn’t an instruction.

And you don’t have to figure this out alone.

  • Why I Couldn’t Stop Gambling: It Wasn’t About the Money

If gambling was really about money, why didn’t losing it make me stop?

In this episode of The Last Bet, Ryan shares the realization that changed how he understood his gambling addiction: he wasn’t just chasing money. He was chasing anticipation, escape, and those few seconds before finding out whether he’d won or lost.

Drawing on his own experience, Ryan explores how winning became permission to keep betting, losing became a reason to chase losses, and both outcomes kept him stuck in the same cycle. He also discusses dopamine’s role in anticipation and reinforcement, the emotional needs gambling filled, and why recovery meant more than deleting betting apps.

From sports betting to blackjack, roulette, and slots, this conversation looks beyond the financial losses to ask: What feeling are you actually chasing?

Ryan hasn’t placed a bet since May 20, 2023. He shares what it took to adjust to life without constant action, find healthier ways to meet his needs, and recognize that what initially felt like boredom could actually be peace.

  • How Casinos Keep You Gambling: The Psychology Behind the Bet

The casino does not need to cheat you. It just needs to keep you playing.

In this episode of The Last Bet, Ryan exposes the psychology behind casino gambling and shares how blackjack, craps, roulette, and slot machines kept him trapped in the cycle of chasing losses.

From casino chips that stop feeling like real money to near misses, “losses disguised as wins,” the illusion of control, and the desperate need to get even, Ryan breaks down how casinos are designed to keep gamblers engaged. He also explores why online casino apps can be even more dangerous when the distance between an urge and a bet is reduced to a tap on your phone.

Ryan spent years believing he could develop a better strategy, manage his bankroll differently, or finally learn when to walk away. Eventually, he discovered the only strategy that worked:

The only way to beat the casino was to stop walking through the door.

If gambling has ever cost you money, peace, relationships, or control, this episode asks one question that could change everything:

When was the last time gambling actually made your life better?

  • The Real Cost of Gambling: It Was Never Just the Money

What if the biggest thing gambling takes from you isn’t your money?

In this episode of The Last Bet, Ryan Stewart gets personal about the cost of gambling addiction that never shows up on a bank statement: lost time, damaged trust, mood swings, secrecy, distraction, and the impact your gambling has on the people closest to you.

When Ryan was gambling, a missed field goal, an interception, or a bad beat could change his entire mood. He could be sitting with his family while mentally being somewhere else, checking scores, calculating losses, chasing the next bet, or figuring out how to get even.

And even when nobody knew how much he had lost, they still lived with the consequences.

Ryan also breaks down one of the hardest realities of gambling recovery: stopping the bets doesn’t instantly rebuild trust. Recovery isn’t about demanding that people believe you’ve changed. It’s about becoming trustworthy through honesty, consistency, presence, and repeated action.

This episode asks one question every person struggling with sports betting or gambling addiction should seriously consider:

If you stopped gambling today, who besides you would get something back?

Your spouse. Your kids. Your family. Your friends. And maybe a version of yourself you haven’t seen in a long time.

Money can sometimes be earned back.

    Time can’t.

If gambling, sports betting, chasing losses, or compulsive betting is controlling your life, you don’t have to win your way out.

    You can walk away.

  • Your Sportsbook Is Not an Investment Account

In this episode of The Last Bet, Ryan Stewart tackles one of the most dangerous shifts happening in modern gambling: gambling being repackaged to look and sound like investing.

“Trader.” “Markets.” “Positions.” “Portfolio.” “Strategy.” “Finding value.” “Managing your bankroll.”

The language sounds sophisticated, but changing the vocabulary doesn’t change the behavior. Your sportsbook is not an investment account. You’re still putting money on an uncertain outcome with the possibility of losing it. And for someone with a history of gambling addiction, that distinction matters.

Ryan breaks down how research, statistics, spreadsheets, betting systems, injury reports, and hours of analysis can create an illusion of control. Knowing sports doesn’t eliminate randomness, and doing more research doesn’t guarantee an edge. For someone struggling with gambling, that feeling of control can become part of the addiction itself.

He also gets into one of gambling addiction’s most destructive cycles: chasing losses. Lose $200 and suddenly the goal becomes getting that $200 back. Then another bet follows. Then another. Eventually, you’re no longer trying to build wealth. You’re desperately trying to get back to zero.

But losing isn’t the only danger.

Winning can feed the addiction too.

A big win can convince you that you finally figured it out. That you have an edge. That you’re different. Instead of walking away, the winnings become a bigger bankroll and another reason to keep betting. Ryan explains why gambling addiction often isn’t really about money at all. It can be about excitement, escape, validation, adrenaline, being right, or trying to repair the financial damage gambling already created.

For anyone in gambling recovery, Ryan argues that the most important question isn’t “Can I win this bet?”

It’s “What happens to me when I place it?”

Does one bet become five? Do you obsessively check scores? Start moving money around? Hide what you’re doing? Stop being present with your family? Chase losses?

Recovery forced Ryan to redefine what winning actually means. Today, winning means watching a game without needing money on it, paying the bills, rebuilding trust, being present, keeping money in the bank without seeing it as a bankroll, and no longer needing the next bet to fix the last one.

The technology may change. The terminology may change. The products may change. Addiction can still recognize the same game underneath it all.

Your sportsbook isn’t an investment account.

Your recovery might be the best investment you ever make.

  • The Gambling Loophole: When Prediction Markets Become the Next Bet

What if the next form of gambling addiction doesn’t look like gambling at all?

No casino. No sportsbook. Instead, you’re “trading” predictions on sports, elections, politics, economics, current events, and other real-world outcomes.

In this episode of The Last Bet, Ryan Stewart takes on the growing world of prediction markets and a question that matters far more than what these platforms are legally called: What happens when something labeled as trading activates the exact same behaviors as gambling?

For someone with a history of gambling addiction, the label can become the loophole.

This isn’t gambling. I researched it. I understand this market. I have an edge. I know what’s going to happen.

But knowledge doesn’t eliminate uncertainty, and calling a wager an informed prediction doesn’t necessarily change what happens in your brain when money, anticipation, winning, losing, and chasing are involved.

    Ryan breaks down:

    • Why prediction markets can make risk-taking feel intellectual
    • How addiction uses technicalities to justify old behaviors
    • Why being informed can create a dangerous illusion of control
    • The warning signs that “trading” may actually be triggering your gambling patterns
    • How frictionless technology puts constant opportunities to wager in your pocket
    • Why chasing losses can survive even when the platform and terminology change
    • The questions people in gambling recovery should ask before putting money behind any uncertain outcome
    • Why recovery requires understanding what you were actually chasing in the first place

The gambling industry and technology will continue to evolve. The apps will get faster. The products will become more sophisticated. And the language used to describe them will change.

Your recovery doesn’t need a technicality.

If something starts activating the same compulsive behaviors that once destroyed your peace, you don’t need someone else to officially classify it as gambling before deciding it isn’t good for you.

    Because addiction loves loopholes.

    Recovery doesn’t need them.
