The Last of Us: Mashup Podcast for season 2, episodes 5 and 6

Listen Later

With The Last of Us season finale tonight, Pete and Mike dig into the previous two episodes:
What awaits everyone in Seattle?
The Seraphites (Scars):

The first we see of the Seraphites comes in The Last of Us season 2 episode 3. We meet a group of people on a forest trail to Seattle (the same road Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina (Isabela Merced) take later in the episode), with each member clad in hooded garments branded with the same strange symbol.

They’re all also marked by the same self-inflicted facial scarring on either cheek (hence their nickname, the “Scars”). It looks like these marks are given early in life for members of this group, as even Constance (Makena Whitlock), the very young girl in their party, has them. The Seraphites are mentioned in episode 4 as the “holy mortification” to join the faction.

The WLF:

A militia group hailing from Seattle, the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) is identifiable by its logo, which features a snarling wolf on a yellow triangle. We first see this in episode 2 on one of their backpacks, and Ellie and Dina continue to find their logo in subsequent episodes.

Episode 5:
Ellie and Dina:

Dina uses the walkie-talkie she took off a dead WLF soldier to triangulate their location. She discovers a gap in their movements surrounding a large building. Dina and Ellie set off to slip through the coverage of WLF soldiers as they make their way to the building. They attempt to get to the hospital in Seattle, where the WLF has a base of operations, to find Abby. Earlier in the episode, the WLF had to seal up the three basement levels of the hospital because people can get infected by breathing the air.

Stalkers:

After entering the building, Ellie and Dina encounter half a dozen smart, infected stalkers. Ellie encountered one of them in the first episode of the season, and the smart one (the Stalker) bit Ellie. Ellie tells Dina to secure herself in a cage while she draws the stalkers to her. She can not get infected because she is immune.

Ellie and Dina were close to being harmed when, all of a sudden, the Stalkers were being shot and driven away by Jesse. He helps get Dina and Ellie to safety, and explains that he and Tommy left the night after Ellie and Dina did. And Jesse’s appearance came at a good time, too. They split up after Dina got shot by a Seraphite with an arrow.

Ellie hunts:

After getting away from the WLF and Seraphites, Ellie notices she is close to the hospital and makes her way inside. She spots Nora, who was in the ski lodge when Abby killed Joel. Nora tries to run for it, drawing Ellie’s attention, but she runs into a hallway with a dead end. She goes into an elevator shaft to the level the WLF had sealed off for a good reason. Ellie tracks her down and asks again where Abby’s location is. Nora will not give up the information willingly but finds that Ellie is the immune girl rumored to be a potential cure.

Nora tries to tell Ellie what Joel did, but Ellie says she already knew. Ellie takes a pipe and hits Nora with it to get the information she seeks. The episode ends with a flashback of Ellie waking up, and Joel is standing by her doorway into her bedroom.

Episode 6:
Joel’s youth:

At the start of the episode, we meet a younger Joel and Tommy. Tommy cries because he did something wrong and fears what their father will do to him. Joel tells Tommy to go to his room because he will take the punishment instead. When Joel’s dad, Javier Miller, gets home, he talks over the situation with Joel instead. Tony Dalton plays Javier Miller. He has been in such shows as Better Call Saul and Daredevil: Born Again. Javier tells Joel a story that would make anyone’s skin crawl. However, the story had a good message. If Joel ever became a parent, Javier hopes he parents a bit better than himself.

Flashbacks:

In episode 6, we see a few flashbacks to Ellie’s birthdays. It covers the timeline from the end of season 1 until the start of season 2. My favorite of the flashbacks was when Joel takes Ellie to the museum. Of course, we get the answer we have had since the first episode of season 2. How did Joel kill Eugene? I did not like that part, considering I love the actor playing Eugene. Joe Pantoliano has been in many movies and television shows.

Upon returning to the town, Ellie tells the truth about what happened to Eugene.

Porch conversation:

Earlier in the season, Ellie walked past the porch to enter the garage, and we thought they never talked that night. However, a flashback shows that Ellie returned to the porch, where she and Joel talked about the events with the Fireflies.

Ellie is upset about Joel’s lying to her all this time. She says she can never forgive him but would like to try. Joel says the line his father told him. If Ellie ever has a kid or kids, he hopes she does it a bit better than him.
