It was April 1st, 1981, when Johnny Waterman, a 29 year old brilliant climber and haunted soul, set out from the Mountain House deep in the Ruth Glacier of Denali National Park.  His goal was the East Buttress of Denali, approached via the northwest fork of the Ruth - an audacious, almost impossible route in the winter.

He carried remarkably little: a sled, snowshoes, not much food, and wands to mark his route. No tent, no sleeping bag. He told a fellow climber he believed he could manage with minimal gear.

He was last seen somewhere around 11,000 feet - cutting a straight line through a labyrinth of crevasses and snow chutes. 

Then…. He vanished.

On the night of July 6th, 2019, in western Nebraska, a young father seemingly vanished into thin air. 

He was Chance Englebert, a 25 year old welder, cowboy and newlywed - gone without a trace.  Earlier that day, Chance had been visiting his in-laws when a casual round of golf turned tense due to some remarks about his new job that angered him.  Upset, he told his wife he wanted to go back home to Wyoming.  When she didn’t agree to leave town - he got out of the car and walked away.  Alone. Surveillance cameras later captured him walking through town, looking down at his phone, like someone reading a map. He sent a final text that didn’t sound like it came from him. And just like that, no one ever heard from him again.

His disappearance ignited one of the most baffling manhunts in the region. Drones, cadaver dogs, hundreds of volunteers on the ground, on horseback, and ATVs,

In the fall of 2017, Enrique Garibay Ruiz—a physicist, mathematician, and writer—left Budapest for what he promised would be a short trip to the United States. He visited New York, then flew west to Los Angeles, checking into a hostel and renting a gray Toyota RAV4. He told his family he’d be home soon.

But Enrique never came home.

On October 3rd, he checked out of the hostel.

 On October 4th, he rented the car.

 On October 5th, he told his wife he was at the airport, waiting for a flight back to Hungary.

Just hours later, in the early morning of October 6th, his credit card was swiped at a Carl’s Jr. near LAX. After that—nothing. The car was never returned. Enrique was never seen again.

In one of the busiest cities in the world, he simply vanished.

It was spring break on Florida’s Gulf Coast - sun, surf, and twenty-two college students crammed into a rental house along Panama City Beach.  Among them was 21 year old Reny Jose, a student from Rice University with a bright future ahead of him.  

But on the night of March 3, 2014, Reny stepped out into the evening and was never seen again.  By the next morning, his friends reported him missing.
