Patrick’s father Mike Mullane flew on STS-41D, STS-27 and STS-36.

Space Shuttle Atlantis suffered extensive damage when the nose cone of one of the SRBs broke off and hit the vehicle. Here’s a link to the damage report.

Patrick met Judy Resnik and Sally Ride during get-togethers held at his home.

STS-1 was the first flight of the Space Shuttle Program.

The only father-son astronaut pair were Owen Garriott and his son, Richard Garriott. Although Owen was a NASA astronaut, Richard is technically a “space flight participant,” and not an astronaut. Richard is a video game designer who paid for his flight into space.

The only other astronaut offspring biography is Rosemary Rossa’s To the Moon: An Autobiography of an Apollo Astronaut’s Daughter.

Emily and Paul discuss the origin of Space Hipsters, the origin of her interest in space exploration and what interests her as a writer and blogger. She also discusses the myth of a mutiny aboard Skylab.

Host Paul Ring recalls his interview with Apollo 12 Lunar Module Pilot, and Skylab II Commander Alan Bean. Whip up a spaghetti dinner and enjoy this premiere episode of The Launch Pad Space Podcast.

The show opens with a quick introduction to the host and the podcast, including what it is and what we hope it will become. Then, Ring then talks about his first interaction with Bean on a Sunday night in July 2009.

In the first clip, Bean talks about his experiences as Apollo 12 launched into a thunderstorm. It’s an oft-told tale, but this time without discussion of a certain Signal Conditioning Equipment switch. This discussion segues into talk about the computers aboard the launch vehicle and the spacecraft.

The subject then switched to food. Bean says the food was “pretty good,” but he said he had a favorite meal from Earth that he wanted to be the first to eat on the Moon. As far as anyone can tell, he was.

Lastly, he spoke about coming up to the Boston area to work with the people from the Draper Lab at the Massachusetts Institution of Technology. He also talked about sense of pride he has with everyone who worked on the Apollo Program.

Then Ring goes on to detail Bean’s Skylab achievements and tells a story about the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 12 launch, when he met Bean in person.
