The Layman's Guide to the Lectionary

We come to the beginning of Holy Week, with readings from Zechariah 9:9-12, Philippians 2:5-11, and Mark 14-15.  Having already covered the first two readings in previous episodes, today we cover the passion narrative of Christ from Mark's gospel.

We read this weekend about the new covenant of God's forgiveness for us (Jeremiah 31:31-34), how Jesus is our great High Priest (Hebrews 5:1-10), and we see how Jesus' kingdom is not like this world's kingdoms, nor is it what the disciples expect it to be (Mark 10:(32-34) 35-45).

A couple of the most famous verses in God's Word show up this weekend, with Ephesians 2:1-10 (8-9 that we are saved by grace through faith, not by works) and John 3:14-21 (16, for God so loved the world).  Also, we pair those up with Numbers 21:4-9 and the plague of fiery serpents.

We hear the Ten Commandments from Exodus 20:1-17, the foolishness of God versus the wisdom of men in 1 Corinthians 1:18-31, and Jesus cleansing the temple in John 2:13-22 (23-25 optional).

This weekend we look at Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16 (God's promise to Abram/Abraham), Romans 5:1-11 (while we were still sinners, Christ died for us), and Mark 8:27-38 (who is Jesus and what does it mean to follow Him?).

As we begin the season of Lent together, we do so with texts that point us to trials and temptations.  We read from Genesis 22:1-18, James 1:12-18, and Mark 1:9-15.
