  • 031: Do You Have What It Takes to Start a Non-Profit? with Zakiya Esper of Sowing Seeds into the Midlands
Many people desire to start a non-profit without a true understanding of the amount of work, grit, blood, sweat, and tears it takes. Zakiya Esper, Founder and Executive Director of Sowing Seeds into the Midlands, sheds light on the good, the bad, and the ugly of running a non-profit.
After years of working as a juvenile probation officer in South Carolina, Zakiya became increasingly alarmed by the gap in support services for the teens she served. Many mentorship programs in SC operate at capacity and cannot meet the demand for services. The vision for Sowing Seeds into the Midlands was birthed from Zakiya’s belief in redemption for troubled youth, especially those living in the communities where she was raised.
In this episode, Zakiya talks about...
how she balanced starting a non-profit with being a new wife and mom
ways to make a difference for a cause without starting a non-profit
using social media as a tool for asking for exactly what you want
the downfall of "passion" and what you need when passion runs out
what she would've done differently to build a stronger foundation for Seeds
character traits you need as the director of a non-profit
