  • Becoming a CEO with Shannon Minifie

This show is a great case study into what can happen when we’re brave enough to try something new and overcome the fear of launching something that’s not  perfect… after all, done is often better than perfect.

This podcast started during the early months of covid as a little curiosity project and here we are 100 episodes later, having had the opportunity and privilege to interview some truly fantastic guests.

Some of them have been well known leaders from big businesses, and many have been what I would describe as truly incredible, every-day leaders. Whatever their background or notoriety, they’ve all been equally interesting and inspiring.

But now let me introduce today’s guest… Shannon Minifie who is the CEO of Box of Crayons. She began in academia, a pursuit driven by her desire to be a part of conversations she thinks are important. She embarked on the learning and development path in 2016, bringing with her more than a decade of experience in education and in practicing incisive investigation.

Shannon has a PhD in English, and while literature and literary criticism persist as her favourite hobby, she is thrilled to lead the team at Box of Crayons whose key mission is to unleash the power of curiosity.

We spoke at length in this episode about her transition into the CEO role, and her top tips from successfully taking over as CEO from the company’s founder – Michael Bungay Stanier – who I interviewed in episode 78.

  • Company Values Done Well with Andrew Leaver

Andrew Leaver who is CEO of Brand Partnership Group, a business dedicated to accelerating growth for Brand Partners in an ever-connected world.

It is made up of three businesses: the brand engagement agency, Blue Square,   Creative Monster which connects and engages audiences through digital, social and event experiences whether that’s virtual, physical or hybrid – and The Pulse Agency that enables marketers and businesses to truly understand their consumers.

Andrew has been doing all of this for over 20 years, for some of the most iconic companies in the world including Unilever, The Coca-Cola Company and Samsung.

When doing my research on Andrew and the businesses within the Brand Partnership Group, I kept reading about values, culture and creating an organisation that nobody wants to leave.

As such, this conversation focuses in on the real value of company values. We spoke at length about how to move values from a set of meaningless words on the wall or corporate website, to something that makes a real difference to the organisations performance and the people who work there.

  • Leadership Lessons from The Royal Shakespeare Company with Becky Valentine

This week we are joined by Becky Valentine who is the Co-Owner and Lead of Sustainability, Wellbeing and Building Health at Spenbeck, an award-winning business specialising in optimising work environments to help people and companies thrive.

As the winner of the 2022 East Midlands Green Leader award, Becky utilises her experience and expertise in the use of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals to support companies in embedding sustainability and achieving their environmental targets, strengthening recruitment and retention of key staff and clients.

I absolutely loved my conversation with Becky and I know that you will too. It was a fascinating conversation where we spoke about what it's like leading a family business, or more specifically, taking over and continuing to develop your father’s business.

We spoke about horizon scanning, connecting the dots and taking risks.

My highlight of this episode was hearing about how Becky – as someone with no acting experience – performed in the Royal Shakespeare Company for 12 weeks, culminating in public performances. The leadership – and life lessons – Becky took from this are quite incredible!
