I like this quote from Einstein. I think he understood the importance of standing out from the crowd. In his amazing intelligence, he also had great wisdom. You can never go any further than the crowd you hang around. Like a runner, you have to break away from the pack to get into the lead, to be the winner.

This quote reminds me of a story that I heard when I was young. It was very similar to the concept this quote embodies. My mentors when I was younger used to tell me to stay out of the crab basket.

What is a crab basket? When we went crabbing as a kid, we used to stick stinky, old chicken necks, gizzards, etc., into a crab basket.  We would throw the basket into the water and wait for the crabs to crawl into the basket. Now one would assume if the hole was big enough for the crab to crawl into the basket, it would be big enough for it to climb  back out of. And it was.

But, what happens when the crab gets into the basket and another crab goes into the basket, to feed on the chicken necks? They would start fighting over it and when one of the crabs tried to escape with a chicken neck, the other crabs would grab the crab and pull it back into the basket to fight over it some more. The other crabs would never let another crab leave the basket. They would always pull the other crabs back into the basket.

That's kind of like the crowd you hang around with. When you hang with the crowd, they will always keep you hanging with them, by pulling you back down with them.

To be successful, you have to not think or run like the crowd. Be yourself. Walk you own path. Do what you need to do to succeed.

If you want to be different than the you are now, you have to get yourself around those that can help you. You have to be around those of like mind.

Don't let the crabs pull you back into the basket.

This is a key to being a success in my opinion. When I was younger, just starting my career, I read a short book about career development and the number one lesson I learned was that if you wanted to be successful, you had to provide value. The greater value that you provide, the greater value you have.

I frequently teach the young people I mentor that they need to do all that they can learn what they can so they can be of value to the people they work with and for. They need to be able to do more, to be more than everyone else. The greater value they provide, the more they will be worth.

How do you provide value to the people you work with, or want to work with. When you are preparing your resume, your CV, you have to let people know the value you have provided in the past and what value you will provide in the future. Value Counts!

Joe Fairless is someone that couldn't figure out what he wanted to do in life and after changing his college major several times, he went into Marketing. Setting a goal to be with the best to be the best, he moved to New York City. Joe became the Vice President of a major advertising firm before he was 30. He was good at that he did and he achieved the goals he set.

Then he quit.

Yes, like several entrepreneurs I have talked with this year, Joe quit his corporate career to go into full-time real estate investing. Like he did with advertising, he went big! He went into buying multifamily properties, apartment buildings. That is where the wealth is at, not single family homes.

Business can be tough. It takes someone that will take risks to be able to get things done at times.  If you are not willing to take a risk from time to time maybe, as Ray Kroc says, you should get out of business.  Ray Kroc built a thriving business with the McDonalds franchise.  He took risks initially just to get it started. He took a big risk when he bought the McDonald brothers burger business.

Are you willing to take the risks you need to take in business. Are you able to do what it takes to make the decisions needed in business.

This is a tough quote from Ray Kroc, but it is a tough life as an entrepreneur. You can make it, but you will have to take risks at times and you should be willing to do it.

"I can't do that." "I'm not qualified to do that."

These are some of the statements most people make when asked if they can do or be something. Most people think that way.

Why? You should focus on why perhaps you can do something. You probably could do it. You don't know that you can't until you try. If you think more along the I can do it mentality you will not be the norm, you will be an exception to the rule. That makes you exceptional, doesn't it.

The can'ts you are thinking are part of the Impostor syndrome. These are the negative, limiting beliefs that our subconscious mind can throw out to keep us from moving past the programming it has received over the years. But you can change that programming.

I talked about how the subconscious mind can be programmed when we are young and how we can work through the critical mind filter in Episode 34 , Is this what you struggle with?

It is important to change the negative programming. The Goal Achievement Success System I put together allows us to bypass the critical mind filter that keeps out the unknowns. If your success is an unknown to it, you have to change it to a known.
