  • 69: Shifting from Imposter Syndrome to Unconditional Self-Worth with Dr. Adia Gooden

Do you know what the difference is between self-esteem and unconditional self-worth? Do you demand perfection of yourself and anything less feels like failure? If these questions resonate, this episode is for you! We have a rare opportunity to glean wisdom from Dr. Adia Gooden, the great mind and heart behind the Unconditionally Worthy podcast. Adia received her B.S. in Psychology from Stanford University and her PhD in Clinical-Community Psychology from Chicago’s DePaul University. She served as a Staff Psychologist and the Coordinator for Multicultural Outreach and Support at The University of Chicago Student Counseling Service and then as Director of the Clinic and Community Programs at the Family Institute at Northwestern. Now, she gets the word out about unconditional self-worth full time through psychotherapy, speaking, writing, the podcast, and online courses. Today, Adia will share her personal journey into this niche, the difference between self-esteem and unconditional self-worth and how to cultivate the latter, and dealing with the pervasive LeaderShifter challenge of imposter syndrome (HINT: achievement is NOT the way out, so stop trying to prove!), among other eye-opening topics. If you want even more, get your free copy of her e-book and listen to her Tedx Talk that turned me into a raving fan. Bottom line: what Brene Brown is to vulnerability, Dr. Gooden is to unconditional self-worth!

  • 68: Retaining Your Rockstars with Dr. Beverly Kaye

If you’re a leader concerned about losing your best talent in the highly competitive post-covid job market, you need to listen in! Today’s guest is a woman after my own heart with bold and humorous book titles such as Help them Grow or Watch them GO, Up is Not the Only Way, and Love ‘Em or Lose ‘Em: Getting Good People to Stay! Dr. Beverly Kaye is an internationally recognized authority on talent development and employee retention, and I’ve wanted to interview her since I first saw her speak at a conference nearly ten years ago! In fact, Bev was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Association for Talent Development (ATD) in 2018 and the Institute for Management Studies (IMS) in 2019. On this episode, we trace her passion for career development, starting from her days as a college administrator and dean where she observed, in her words, “A students at A schools thinking there will be an A line I stand in and I will have an A life…(but they had) no contingency plan.” For a culture of development to work, companies need individuals with spark, managers who actively support, and effective org systems and structures. One non-negotiable way for LeaderShifters to support their top performers is having “stay interviews,” a term actually coined by Bev that has gained lots of traction as a proactive way to have fewer exit interviews! She also has sage advice for people feeling stuck in their careers to consider a wide range of mobility options, or be “opportunity minded instead of opportunity blinded.”

  • 67: Leader Self-care with Holistic Detox Coach Lars Dierauer

Do you ever wonder why you don’t see much improvement in your health or any weight loss after struggling through a cleanse? Today’s guest will explain why. I collect friends/good people all over the world in my travels, and Swiss native Lars Dierauer is one of them (we met in Indonesia in 2019)! Lars is not only a fellow wanderluster, but also a holistic health coach with a focus on digestion and detoxification. The gut is responsible for 80% of our immune system. That’s right, 80%, so everything we put into our mouth either makes us healthier or sicker. So if your gut is unhealthy or “leaky,” that must first be healed before any detox will be effective. We cover a lot of ground, including the nine signals the gut sends to the brain, foods and tips to improve digestion, and the importance of quality sleep. You’ll also get a tutorial on water – it’s more complex than I’d ever known! – and bust the trendy myth that high alkaline water is always the best to drink. Lars is my health coach, and I’m enthusiastic to share his wisdom with fellow LeaderShifters. Leaders can never do or be their best at work if their bodies aren’t up to the task, so tune in to start your journey to better health! If you want to connect with Lars, please email me at [email protected] for his contact information.

  • 66: What Mountain Climbing Can Teach Us About Leadership with Chuck Garcia

How much did I LOVE interviewing fellow Wall Street veteran turned leadership consultant, speaker, author, podcast host, and mountaineer, Chuck Garcia?? Let me count the ways!! Chuck spent the first 25 years of his career working at Bloomberg, Blackrock, and Citadel before transitioning to help others climb their proverbial mountains, as he puts it. He’s the founder of Climb Leadership International, author of A Climb to the Top, and host of a podcast by the same name on which his guests share stories of how they overcame adversity, career challenges, and “climbed” unexpected obstacles. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University where he teaches Leadership Communication in the Graduate School of Engineering. Of course, I admire him even more for his mountaineering accomplishments, which include Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Elbrus, the Matterhorn, as well as mountains in Alaska and the Andes. In fact, it was a close call on 9/11 (he was en route to give a talk at the World Trade Center when the planes hit) that inspired him to climb Mount Rainier in Washington to honor his lost colleagues and friends exactly one year later on Sept 11, 2002. Chuck also shares the story of how his climbing metaphor for leadership resonated so much with his left-brained Columbia grad students that he turned it into a more widely available offering, The Emotional Intelligence Lab. Many experts tout empathy, resolving conflict productively, and remaining calm under pressure as today’s most essential leadership traits. I couldn’t agree more with Chuck that climbing the mountain of personal growth is the prerequisite path to get there.

  • 65: The Passion Test and Why LOVE is Good for Business with LuAnn Buechler

You will appreciate why today’s guest, LuAnn Buechler, is known as “Little Spark” when you hear her talk about the time she showed up at a heated political event in 2020 and got people on BOTH sides to give her hugs in an otherwise highly contentious setting! That effort was part of ihug, a non-partisan community she created of people who are willing to hug their neighbors, friends, family, colleagues and community, even when they may fail to see eye-to-eye on issues. A master trainer, coach, speaker and event maestra, LuAnn’s superpower is lighting fires that turn clients’ passions into profits. She helps individuals, teams, and companies do this using a unique tool called The Passion Test, which is to our heart and soul as Strengthsfinder is to our intellect (i.e. getting to the WHY of what we do rather than the how). Having been through Passion Test coaching with LuAnn, I can attest first hand that it helps me choose in favor of my passions every single day.

  • 64: Virtual Campfire Inspiration with Leadership Coach Tony Martignetti

When leaders unlock their unique potential and lead from a place of inspired purpose, they impact and inspire everyone around them. That’s a key philosophy of today’s guest, the wise Tony Martignetti, fellow leadership coach, founder of Inspired Purpose Coaching, and host of podcast The Virtual Campfire. The idea for his podcast name comes from one of the earliest forms of community: sitting around a campfire and sharing stories to build trust, share knowledge, and inspire others. As I did, Tony became a leadership coach after shifting out of a career in finance, where he noticed that the leaders weren’t inspiring and didn’t practice what they preached. He started by questioning his purpose, letting go of his old corporate-y identity, and embracing a truer identity of explorer, adventurer, and creative artist. He had to “leave the room to change the room.” As part of this conversation, we challenge you to step back and think about who you really are — not traditional descriptions about what you do for work, but based on what else defines you, what lit you up as a child, and/or what truly interests you. Then be open to tell a new story around the virtual campfire in you circle! And speaking of stories, stay tuned for Tony’s upcoming book, Climbing the Right Mountain: Navigating the Journey to An Inspired Life.

  • 63: Always Be Celebrating with Charlie Bailes of ABC Fine Wine & Spirits

As they say, it’s 5 o’clock somewhere! Join us on this week’s episode with a glass of wine, as I’m joined by Charlie Bailes, a 4th generation leader in family-owned ABC Fine Wine & Spirits.

Their service philosophy is “We make everyday celebrations better by providing an exceptional experience for our team members and guests,” and their core values are respect, inspire, empower. Hear how these foundations guided the 85-year old company to seamlessly resume business at its 126 Florida-based stores early in the pandemic.

Charlie also emphasizes the importance of support systems that enable leaders to be effective, such as family, coaches, and colleagues.

When he’s not tending to ABC’s HR or supply chain, Charlie is building his own entrepreneurial venture, CB Supplements, a producer of premium-grade, multi-collagen protein powders. In the wake of unraveling a medical mystery with his daughter, he adopted the “food is medicine” philosophy and decided to share one of the secrets to success in her recovery. Check out Collagen College for more resources about this super-food!

  • 62: Speaking Up and Reaching Out about Workplace Suicide with Executive Director Erin Ivie

It is always a great pleasure to welcome to the podcast former colleagues who have gone on to do incredibly purposeful and inspiring work in the world. Today’s guest, Erin Ivie, was a cherished team member with me at Plum TV in Vail, CO back in the day and is currently the Executive Director of Speak Up Reach Out, a non-profit whose mission is to prevent suicide in Eagle County, CO through training, awareness, and hope. Erin shares the very personal story of losing her best friend Luke to suicide in 2007 and how that set her out on her current path. She and her team rely on many different constituencies to accomplish their mission, ranging from citizens, teachers, and other educators to local businesses, healthcare workers, and law enforcement. Don’t think you have a role to play in suicide prevention? Well, you do! Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., and studies show that one-third of middle schoolers experience suicidal ideation. The enduing stress and anxiety of the pandemic has only exacerbated the situation. EVERYONE has a role in preventing suicide. If you are struggling or are concerned about someone you know, tune in to learn about common signs of depression and effective questions to pose to if you pick up on those signs. And if you’re in a formal leadership position, listen up for provisions to add to your sick leave policy to support mental health, consult the invaluable resources on their website (including the very cool set of Coping Cards), and bookmark workplacesuicideprevention.com.

  • 61: Getting Honest about “Ethical Fungus” with Leadership Consultant and Author Ron Carucci

Get a double dose of smarts and irreverence on today’s episode with leadership expert, prolific author, two-time TEDx speaker, and co-founder of Navalent Consulting, Ron Carucci! The timing on his soon to be released book, To Be Honest: Lead with the Power of Truth, Justice, and Purpose, couldn’t be better. The essence is that, more than ever, today’s leaders need to say the right thing, do the right thing, and say/do them for the right reasons. Backed by 15 years of research, Ron explains that four factors set the conditions for people’s behaviors, and when done well, the organization is 16 times more likely to have people tell the truth, behave fairly, and serve a greater good:

    1. Clear identity
    2. Dignified and fair accountability
    3. Transparent governance
    4. Healthy cross-functional relationships
    5.

In contrast, when these factors are absent or ineffective, noxious organizational conditions such as institutionalized duplicity, lack of dignity and fairness, and silo formation often compel employees to choose dishonesty and self-interest, or “ethical fungus” in Ron-speak (Enron or WorldCom anyone?!). You’ll also enjoy our discussions around pulling the proverbial weeds to maintain high performing teams, creating belonging through simple acts, and saying ‘I love you’ in professional contexts.
