The Past President of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), President at Team Parker and a practicing Emergency Physician, my guest today has a resume studded with awards for her leadership roles in an illustrious career. 

 She is an expert on practice management topics and has been invited to speak nationally and internationally on these topics as well as coding, reimbursement, health policy reform, professional development, diversity and inclusion and innovation.

She has received multiple awards for her leadership roles, including Fierce Healthcare’s Women of Influence in 2019 and was a Finalist in 2016 for Modern Healthcare’s 50 Most Influential Physician Executives. 

Her work in Diversity and Inclusion while President of ACEP is well recognized and continues to advance today.

We discuss many topics in this episode, including the meaning of being a leader, how  women physicians can get started on their own leadership journey, the challenges she faced and the lessons she learnt as a physician, a mom and a leader.

“How can I improve the lives of those I serve?”  

That has been Dr. Kayser Enneking’s mantra throughout her career as a leader in

her community and career.

Dr. Enneking has held several leadership positions at the University of Florida. A full professor by age 42, Dr. Enneking turned her professional drive to Chairing the Department of Anesthesiology, where she focused her efforts on patient safety, providing consistent patient care, and promoting women in medicine. 

She served in several other leadership roles as you will hear in this interview.

Dr. Enneking has made improvement in health care her mission. 

Now, she is running for Florida State House District 21 to fight to expand health care access. She understands that leadership is about guiding change, not just announcing something doesn’t work. Her passion is to get things done.”

In this interview, Kayser and I talk about challenges facing women physicians from the ones in early career stages, where balancing a family life and a career in medicine can be a tough challenge, to later stages and the challenges we face in leadership positions. 

“Advancement is not all about just being the CEO. Advancement is about saying yes to a lot of things, even stuff you don't want to do. Say yes to the things that you can do and do well. And don't ever say no twice in a row.”

Who am I and why should you even be listening to this podcast?

In this episode, I take you back to the beginning, on how and why I felt this was necessary for me to do for all women physicians.
As every woman physician will attest to, we face unique challenges in the workplace. Sometimes because of our gender, our mentality, our unpreparedness for assuming leadership roles, but mostly because of various limits we put on ourselves.
Medical School does not prepare us with the skillset necessary to be effective leaders, and most often, if we are in leadership roles, it is because we are 'Accidental Leaders".
In this podcast, my goal is to take you through stories of women physicians just like you who became leaders and thrived and can teach each of us valuable lessons.
