    Irene Goodwin is Ojibwe First Nations, and grew up in Northern Ontario. Her Indigenous name, Wasa-Newab-Ma'iingan-Anang-Quay, meaning Wolf-Star Woman, was given to her by her Elders. From gathering firewood to going fishing with her family, Irene spent most of her time exploring the outdoors as a child. She is also a Day School Survivor, as she attended the Collins Indian Day School in Collins, Ontario.

    Gordon Spence, is joined by Erroll Kinistino, where they dive into talks about his career,
    life experiences, and Reconciliation in Canada.


    Actor, entertainer, Master of Ceremonies, drama workshop instructor, director, mentor, singer and writer. Erroll Kinistino is without a doubt a man of many talents. Originating from the Ochapowace First Nations Reserve in Whitewood, Saskatchewan, Mr. Kinistino has been involved in the film and theatre industry for countless years. He has played parts in many films and theatre productions throughout Canada. He is probably best known for his recurring role as Leon in Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's television drama series North of 60 (1992). Additionally, he appeared on Corner Gas, one of the most popular comedy series in Canadian TV history. Now living in Regina, Mr. Kinistino is also a grass dancer and sings contemporary Native Canadian music.

    On this week’s Roots & Hoots episode, the LHF host, Gordon Spence, is joined by Piikani Elder, Harley Bastien, where shares some of his stories and talks about the importance of Mother Earth.

    Mr. Harley Bastien is a member of the Piikani First Nation in Alberta and has been working in the environmental industry for over 30 years. Mr. Bastien’s work involved consulting, volunteering and sitting on advisory boards for various environmental groups and organizations, including First Nations, Provincial and Federal Governments and NGOs. In 2002, he founded Harmony Walkers Inc. (HWI), an environmental consulting company that provides environmental services nationally and internationally. HWI offers a unique conceptual approach to environmental protection by combining Traditional Knowledge and modern science.

  • Roots and Hoots Episode 5 - Interview with LHF Board Member Adam North Peigan

    Mr. North Peigan is from the Piikani First Nation in Treaty 7 and currently resides in Edmonton. During his career, Adam has advocated for Indigenous Programs and Services in Health, Child and Family, Employment and Training, Education, Housing, Justice, and Reconciliation. He has numerous years of experience in governance as a member of multiple Boards and Committees in Indigenous communities in British Columbia and in Alberta. Adam showed leadership in his community of Piikani by serving on Chief and Council. He also held Public Office by being appointed by the Minister of Health in British Columbia in 1998 to one of the largest Health Authorities in BC, the South Fraser Health Region.

    On this week’s Roots & Hoots episode, the Legacy of Hope Foundation’s host, Gordon Spence, is joined by Albert Beck, Métis human rights activist, where they discuss his life experiences and the impacts of the Sixties Scoop.

    Mr. Beck is Métis from Winnipeg, Manitoba living in Ottawa, Ontario, and has been involved in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) education, policy and program initiatives for Indigenous Peoples in Canada for decades. In 2016, he received the HIV Exceptional Leadership Award for his dedication, passion, leadership and commitment to the Indigenous acquired immunodeficiency syndrome movement in Canada. On the international front, Mr. Beck became the first Métis citizen to be part of the Indigenous Fellowship Program offered by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland. He is the past President of the Ontario Aboriginal HIV/AIDS Strategy and is married to his best friend Craig Phillips. Mr. Beck is currently working with the Métis National Council as a Senior Policy Analyst and Ministerial Sixties Scoop Advisor for their national engagement process.

    The Legacy of Hope Foundation (LHF) is happy to share this week’s episode of Roots & Hoots. Gordon Spence, the host, is joined by Paul Okalik, where he discusses his Inuit traditions, the challenges of wildlife extinction and his passion for life, including his love of golfing.

    Mr. Okalik is Inuk from Nunavut and is fluent in Inuktitut and English. With a political science degree and a Bachelor of Laws in his back pocket, Mr. Okalik was elected the very first Inuit Premier of Nunavut on March 5, 1999, and his mandate became effective on April 1, 1999, the day Nunavut territory came into existence. From 2008 to 2011, he served as a Nunavut Member of the Legislative Assembly. During his time as Premier, Mr. Okalik’s government brought many positive changes to Nunavut, including the enactment of an Official Languages Act (making Inuktitut an official language in Nunavut, in addition to English and French), Inuktitut Language Protection Act, Education Act and a modern Human Rights Act. As a politician, Mr. Okalik has also contributed to the creation of the Inuit Heritage Trust, the Nunavut Implementation Training Committee, the Nunavut Social Development Council and the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board.
