Sitting in circles has been part of human culture since we sat around the fire and told stories of the day’s adventures. We’ve all but forgotten this lost art In the business-as-usual workplace culture which tells us that productivity, efficiency and bottom lines are all that matter. The voice that is driving us to “get it done,” and done quickly, is the same voice that has us running around in a maze that always brings us back to the starting point, more exhausted than before. When we work in circles, we get in touch with our center, our root, our core, which connects us to our sixth sense of sufficiency, gratitude and enoughness. This foundation opens new possibilities: what we can see and where we truly want to go, both individually and collectively. Then, and only then, do we access the inspiration, courage and wisdom that generates intelligent action. What will it take for us to generate critical mass for climate solutions before 2030 in the Northeast bioregion? Climate leadership begins with Self and ripples out into our teams and alliance-building efforts. The Alliance’s vision of a latticework of leadership circles in the Northeast bioregion is inspired by a vision that the founder, Lev Natan, saw over ten years ago; old-growth trees sprouting up out of the earth, instantly reforesting the whole planet. This vision has served as a root metaphor to see the possibility of interconnectedness in our human and living systems. On a practical level, the Iroquois Confederacy’s Native American governance structure has demonstrated what is possible, here in the Northeast - a beautiful example of how we can generate “wisdom energy,” so that our children may have a viable future.
