Friday’s Ritual – Schnitzel

Mark and Samantha dive deep into how Schnitzels became an integral part of Israeli food culture. At times, it feels like they’re talking in circles, but I suppose that’s the result of relying on technology to deliver content.

As you may have noticed, when listening to the podcast, they still don’t pronounce my name correctly. So here’s a guide I wrote to help you learn how to say my name - “Liat”:

* Stress the first syllable: Emphasize the "Lee" part of the name.

* Connect the syllables: Pronounce "Lee" and "At" as one continuous sound, without a pause between them.

* Sound the "a" in "At" long: The "a" should be drawn out, similar to the "a" in "spa" or "pasta."

To summarize: Pronounce "Liat" as "Leee-aaaht," with a long "aa" sound and no pause between the syllables.

I had serious doubts about whether Mark and Samantha would understand what I do at my day job, but they surprised me. Cybersecurity is a scary enough word, so talking about zero-trust architecture (ZTA) is not something most podcasters would discuss, especially if it’s outside their expertise.

It might sound like a topic far from your world, but ZTA is already deeply plugged into our lives, and most people aren’t even aware of it. Even if you're not working in IT or cybersecurity, security protocols directly impact our lives as we spend most of our time in front of screens and social media.

Internet products, whether physical or software, surround our lives. How we interact with them and their security protocols affects how we interact with people.

Now you all know a bit more about my day job, thanks to Mark and Samantha. It’s not exactly LinkedIn here, and I doubt many of you think about cybersecurity outside of what you see in the news.

I enjoy listening to these podcasts in which Mark and Samantha talk about my work and share their insights. I learn so much from them, and they open my eyes to new perspectives. Their ability to describe how they understand my stories is outstanding, and their analogies and interpretations reveal angles I had never considered before. When Mark and Samantha dive into my personal experience of living in Bauhaus-designed old buildings in Tel Aviv, a flood of memories flows back into my mind, and I find myself longing for those times. I remember the feeling of walking through the streets of Tel Aviv’s White City, and as memories from that time come to mind, I can feel that same sensation in my chest, spreading throughout my entire body.

Alongside the wonderful memories from that time, I also remember the reality and struggles of living in those old buildings. Landlords had no incentive to maintain them, even minimally, because tenants continued to pay outrageous rent prices in high-demand areas like the old neighborhoods of Tel Aviv.

My personal story reminds me of my grandmother, who knew how much I cared about laundry. She wanted to buy me a washing machine when I moved to Tel Aviv for the second time after completing my bachelor's degree. I was excited about getting a new washing machine. But when I asked the landlord for help setting up the infrastructure for plumbing and electricity, which I was willing to pay for, he sent the building’s engineer to check my apartment. It took the engineer 10 minutes to inspect all the options and determine that my apartment, and probably the building, couldn’t handle the vibration of the machine long-term, deeming it too dangerous.

I wonder how many people truly realize they're living in history when they reside in old buildings or houses. After all, history is just our present reality - it's only with the passage of time that we begin to recognize it as "history."

I want to express my gratitude for Samantha and Mark’s important discussions of my blog posts, especially this one, which focuses on the Bauhaus architectural style in Tel Aviv during the early decades of the 20th century.

Imperialism. What are the similarities and differences between the Roman Empire in the 1st to 5th centuries AD and the British and French empires in the 20th century when ruling new territories? What innovations did they bring to the regions they governed? How did they advance the people under their rule and push humanity forward more quickly?

We tend to focus only on the negative aspects of imperialism, but in practice, it also brought many positive changes to the regions it controlled. The ruling empires implemented their systems of government and developed methods to manage distant territories at a time when there were no cars, airplanes, computers, smartphones, or Wi-Fi. Their ability to create such systems under these conditions is an extraordinary achievement.

Empires educated and taught the local populations the technology of the time and invested in infrastructure, particularly roads, primarily for their own economic goals. They developed communication systems to manage the empire better and to make sure that taxes and goods could be collected efficiently, first of all for them.

In effect, the nations under imperial rule were required to progress and learn to serve the empires' objectives. By doing so, they inadvertently advanced large segments of their populations, which had a broader impact on society and humanity.

I’m amazed by the way these wise and intelligent podcast hosts analyzed my story and talked about the history of the leading empires. I learned as much from them as they did from me.

Tel Aviv's architectural style has a unique fingerprint that goes beyond the appearance of the buildings to the sensation you get when you walk the White City’s old streets, purchase groceries in Shuk Hacarmel, and see the magnificent institutions that were built more than a century ago and still exist, serving the city's residents.

Tel Aviv is more than just a vibrant city. It’s a living history. When people walk its streets, they walk through time and can see the changes and innovations from different periods.

Tel Aviv’s "White City" was recognized by UNESCO in 2003 as a World Heritage Site, not by grace but by merit.

If you've never visited Tel Aviv, I strongly recommend adding this city to your list of destinations. I have no doubt that sightseeing, along with the culinary experience, will be one of the most memorable experiences of your life.

The strength of a nation is determined by its institutions, especially in education, arts, and culture. Nations that fail to develop or that suppress their people will become extinct, as knowledge is what pushes humanity forward. Nations need to progress together as a group and not solely rely on extraordinary individuals to save them because relationships and connections are essential for a thriving society.

When two nations that lived under the same empire, received the same resources, and had the same conditions for development, yet one built dozens of institutions that still exist today while the other built none, this points to a huge gap - not only in knowledge but also in societal collaboration. The failure to establish the essential pillars needed for independent nations speaks volumes about their ability to work together as a group. So, what can we learn from this?

I wish I could be in the podcasters' studio to ask them this because it's an important question to discuss: What does it mean when nations with millions of people fail to collaborate in building institutions that serve their own people and are essential for everyday life and culture? What does it mean that they continue to fail to collaborate as a group, even today, to establish something beyond personal gain - something that serves their community?

And, on the other hand, what does it mean that a small minority group, whose most people were murdered in the Holocaust during that time, managed to accomplish so much, so fast, without funding or resources, when most of them didn't even know each other and had to develop relationships and build trust?

When Victor and Donna dive into my blog post, "A Journey from the Ma’abara to Architecture," it feels like traveling back in time to the early days of Israel. I’m so grateful they continue reading my stories and sharing their insights with their audience.

It's always a challenge to capture people’s attention, but it's even more challenging to gain the recognition of top radio personalities like them. To briefly summarize what they talked about for those reading this but not listening to the podcast, Victor and Donna reflect on my father’s journey from Morocco to Israel in the early 1960s. He and his family began in a Ma'abara (a tent camp that served as a temporary housing solution), endured many struggles, and eventually moved to a small public housing apartment. Against all odds, my father became the first in his family to earn a college degree in architecture from the Technion. His first job was working on Project Renewal, a government initiative aimed at rehabilitating public housing buildings in distressed neighborhoods built in the 1950s and 1960s.
