A rivalry of a century. A trophy lost for decades. This is the story of the Arizona Territorial Football Championship Cup.

In this special presentation, University Archivist Rob Spindler talks with Digital Projects Librarian Mimmo Bonanni about the longstanding rivalry between the Arizona State University (ASU) Sun Devils and University of Arizona (UA) Wildcats. They will also look into the mystery of the missing cup and where it was eventually discovered in 1983.

The “Duel in the Desert” between ASU and UA is among the nation’s oldest and most heated rivalries, including the oldest trophy in college football as certified by the NCAA. The cup was originally awarded to the Arizona Territorial Normal School football team for winning this league championship after a season of three games in 1899. The Normals, as they were known at the time, were undefeated in gridiron matches with the Phoenix Union High School (6-0), the Phoenix Indian School (6-0) and the University of Arizona (11-2).

Depending on the winner, the cup is on display in the UA Hall of Fame or the University Archives Luhrs Reading Room in Hayden Library.

We continue our series Faculty and Librarians Team-up for Student Success with History and Political Science Bibliographer Ed Oetting and Associate Professor of History Dr. Andrew Barnes. Andrew and Ed collaborate on an online history methodology course which includes an embedded library component. The goal of the library component is to teach students how to do valid historical research online via web based library resources. They faced the challenge of creating effective tutorials and assignments for students around the world that may never set foot in the library.

Celebrating the 30th anniversary of Childsplay, a theatre for young people and their families, Artistic Director David Saar and Curator of the Child Drama Collection Kathy Kryzs talk with Fred about a retrospective exhibit at the Tempe Center for the Arts. In April 2000 Childsplay was recognized by American Theatre magazine as one of the top four professional theatres for young people in the United States. This company has received just about every local and state arts award and national awards for their work in the field.

On November 15, 2007 Tammy Allgood hosted a special workshop “Podcasting 101″ with Library Channel production manager Matthew Harp about podcasting in the libraries at the Arizona Library Association 2007 (AZLA) annual conference. During the session we pulled a member of the audience up and recorded a short interview to demonstrate how podcast production works and present it here for you.

University Archivist and Head of Archives and Special Collections, Rob Spindler and Curatorial and Museum Specialist Karrie Porter Brace discuss Arizona State University’s early research scientists durring the first days of transformation from a small college to a true university. These scientists’ at ASU helped others to understand venomous animals, meteorites, genetics, rare earth oxides, frozen deserts, and local geology.
