Featured Exhibit: Shelter in the Storm: Agnes Smedley at Yaddo (related Podcast)

Curator Karrie Porter Brace talks with Fred about the new exhibit Shelter and the Storm: Agnes Smedley at Yaddo located on the 4th floor of Hayden Library. The exhibit, drawn from University Archives material, reviews the life and the controversy of ASU Alumna Agnes Smedley, advocate for the oppressed, radical, war correspondent, and spy. Agnes Smedley had the longest residency at the artists’ colony Yaddo in Saratoga springs, NY.

 

Highlights of the program include information on Yaddo, Agnes's travels to China and South Asia, her failed attempt at Chinese citizenship, accusations of espionage by General Charles A. Willoughby, and her burial in Beijing.

The Library Channel bids a fond farewell to Marilyn Wurzburger, who retired from ASU Libraries on January 23rd, 2009 after 48 years of service. Host Fred McIlvain, who's career spans nearly 30 years himself, reflects with Marilyn on her years with ASU Libraries discussing the move from the cramped Matthews Library to spacious Hayden Library and the unique collections she helped build. She talks about her tutelage under Assistant Librarian Jay Dobkin and her career growth from cataloger to Head of Special Collections.

Helping to close out this eventful year for ASU Libraries, The Library Channel presents a glimpse into the ASU Labriola National American Indian Data Center highlighting the center's collections, services and partnerships.

In this episode The Library Channel brings you Kinesiology lecturers Jennifer Fay and Tannah Broman and Health Sciences Librarian Sheila Hofstetter. Learn from this lively discussion of how faculty sought to improve their students' ability to quickly find the best research; a critical skill they knew would be vital to their success as students in Kinesiology 200, upper level courses, and future healthcare professionals. The team discusses their collaboration teaching students proper research methods, using the library system and finding available resources. They talk about the challenges they faced in moving students away from simple Google searches to progressing analyzing and synthesizing information, and Sheila illustrates methods dealing with information literacy and access issues.
