The Google Costume Case
Things Aren't Always What They Seem
Have you ever looked at a situation, decided what it meant, and then discovered you had the story completely wrong?
That's what happened to me when some money in my investment account appeared to be missing.
Except, it wasn't.
And that little mystery became a great example of something our brains do all the time: We see what's in front of us, decide what it means, and then respond to our interpretation as though it's a fact.
But things aren't always what they appear to be.
Sometimes fear is wearing a laziness costume.
Sometimes perfectionism is wearing an excellence costume.
Sometimes control is wearing a responsibility costume.
And sometimes an investment is apparently wearing a Google costume. 😂
In this Fresh Start File, we're investigating the difference between what we observe and what we assume it means.Inside the Life Upgrade Lab, we'll look at:
* Why our brains are so quick to make meaning out of what we see
* How an assumption can start feeling like a fact before we've actually investigated it
* Why the first explanation isn't necessarily the right explanation
* How appearances can hide what's actually driving a behavior or situation
* Why getting curious can uncover an entirely different story
* How learning to separate the evidence from your interpretation can change what you do next
🧪 Lab Experiment #016: Look Under the Costume
Think of something in your life that you've already decided you understand.
Then separate these two things:
What do I actually know?
and
What have I decided that means?
Look at the evidence again.
What else could be true?
Is there another explanation you haven't considered?
Is what you're seeing the actual problem, or could it be a symptom, a pattern, or something else wearing a costume that tricks us into believing what isn't true is true?
The goal isn't to second-guess everything you know.
It's to get curious enough to investigate before you treat your first interpretation as the truth.
Sometimes the thing you thought you were looking at isn't actually the thing you're looking at.
Bring me your X. We'll solve for why.
If there's something in your life that doesn't make sense, or you've tried to fix what you thought was the problem and nothing seems to change, I invite you to schedule a consult with me.
We'll look at where you are now, where you want to be six months from now, and investigate what may actually be going on underneath what you can see.
