In the previous sermon we talked about how we guard ourselves against false teachings, and in 9-15 Paul turns our attention to the one and only true teaching—the gospel of Jesus Christ. Every false teaching some way or another says/implies Christ work and His salvation is incomplete. But Paul shows us in verses 9-15 that we have complete salvation in Jesus Christ by transforming us, giving us complete forgiveness, and complete victory.

Our world is filled with false teaching, so how do we guard ourself against the false teachings in our day? Paul wrote this letter because of heresy spreading around the church at Colossae, and he tells them do not be taking captive by empty deceit. As we learn in this message we guard ourselves against false teaching by 1. Walking In Christ, which leads to 2. Be built up and strengthen. And this happens when we read Gods word. Which leads to us being able to 3. Guard ourselves against false teaching.

Last night we continued walking through Colossians and studied Colossians 1:21-23. Paul reminds the believers in Colossae their former state before coming to Christ—that of alienation, hostility, and evil deeds. He reminds them that Christ has reconciled them back to God, and to not shift from the hope of the gospel. As believers we never graduate from the gospel, we must remember that we were once alienated and hostile in mind, but we have been brought near by the blood of Christ. Listen along as we continue studying Colossians. We look at one of the most beautiful passages about our Lord Jesus. I do not think it is by coincidence we arrive at these verses on the Supremacy of Christ at this time. The past 2 weeks we have been looking at how we can know we have gospel fruit in our life and how we continue to grow and be transformed. This week in verses 13-14 we looked at the foundation of that all—we have been delivered, transferred, and have been redeemed. We are walking through the letter of Colossians. I have titled this sermon series “The Preeminent Christ.” I forgot to record the first sermon for verses 1-8, but these week we studied verses 9-12. In verses 1-8 we looked at how we can know the gospel is bearing fruit in our lives: faith in Christ, love for others, and living in view of the hope we have in heaven. Now in 9-12 we break down Paul’s prayer he prayed for the Colossians since he heard of the spiritual fruit.

In this sermon we discuss the person and work of Jesus Christ by looking at the cross. The cross is the heart of the Christain faith, but in order for us to not lose sight of the significance of the cross we must answer a few questions such as: why did the cross occur?, what happen on the cross?, and what does this mean for us today?
