Let us know you were here: liminalventura.org/connectioncardIf you take some heady British education, mix it with a heaping dose of life experience and add a long, meditative trip in a motorcycle sidecar then the only logical outcome is talking lions and bus rides from heaven to hell. Well, maybe not the only logical outcome. But it seemed to suit C.S. Lewis pretty well.Lewis had a way of tackling the deep thing of God and life by looking at them from a different angle. Utilizing story and whimsy he could shake up preconceived notions and our stodgy ways of thinking. Like Emily Dickinson says, “Tell all the truth but tell it slant.” But he could also delve into the difficult and disorienting places that life can take us, places of pain and grief, and not shy away from the truths found there. Bryan shared many tidbits from this author’s life and works but ended by reflecting on his book, The Great Divorce. This includes the bus ride mentioned earlier, giving some of hell’s residents an outing to heaven. Lewis called it an imaginative supposition.  The book explores various themes which are embodied by the different folks visiting heaven. One of heavens residents questions the visitors from hell saying, “Could you, only for a moment, fix your mind on something that is not yourself?” And from there, Bryan called us back to The Examen practice that we spent some time with last week. Taking some time each day to reflect back on it, learning how to recognize the echo of God is even the common, everyday things. To take our eyes off ourselves for a moment and look up to see what surprises we might find.

In this sermon, we get a little reminder of unconditional love and the idea of finding God in all thing courtesy of Ignatius. Gini shared about this cannonball-scarred saint, who went from high society to living in a cave to helping found a religious order. And, it’s kind of reassuring to know, that even someone like that wrestled with feeling like a failure and wondering if he had missed his call.

But in the midst of the wrestling and wandering, Ignatius was learning how to see God in all aspects of life. To recognize the movements of the divine woven throughout his day. And then developing methods of contemplation to help others, even regular folks like us with a day job and outside commitments, to find a few moments to review our day and start to recognize ways that we are moving toward God and spiritual freedom or away from God.

So, we got a nice little second dose of Shane Claiborne (a booster, perhaps?)! Pretty sweet! Thanks, Wayne, for sharing his video and letting us hear his insights directly.

Did you get a chance to listen? Were there thoughts that stuck out to you? Maybe, it was the idea that Jesus shared his message through fascination not force? And the sobering take away that maybe our Christianity has become less and less fascinating. That we’re more interested in excluding rather than including. In making sure people know what we’re against rather than what we are for. Reducing Christianity to a doctrinal statement rather than emulating Jesus, the true embodiment of love.

But, what if Jesus really meant the things he said? So complexly simple, so infuriatingly basic. “What you do for the least of these, you do for me.” Fleshing out this divine love. And what if living through this pandemic season can remind us of this need for embodiment. Of becoming attuned to the pain and suffering of others. Of learning to join with Jesus in this divine solidarity. Tough, beautiful, challenging words to ponder.
