When the going gets tough, John Shumate laughs.

Then he keeps on working through the problems to find creative solutions. And he’s had some big problems. Among them is cancer.

While being treated for cancer, he founded his company from his hospital bed.

How’s that for laughing at a challenge? VentureFirst.com is now in growth mode after its 2009 founding, helping other young companies succeed.

Unsurprisingly for someone with an interesting story, John loves the story behind startups and entrepreneurship, and shied away from investment banking in his early career to help small companies operating on a shoestring have access to high-end financial services like their well-funded counterparts.

He’s found adventure in these ventures.

That’s transferred to his life as well and he’s working toward running an Ironman Triathlon and having fun on the job each and every day.

When Jonathan Raymond’s inner voice of self-doubt comes alive, he treats it like he would a spoiled child.

“I learned not to try to fight with him,” Jonathan told me (Robert) about his inner voice during this podcast. “I don’t have to change his mind. It’s like fighting with a toddler.”

Jonathan most recently confronted his self-doubt as he finished writing his book: “Good Authority: How to Become the Leader Your Team is Waiting For.” (Available now for preorder)

Instead of fighting, though, he lets it voice its point of view and then invokes his parental authority to make a different decision.

His self-doubt doesn’t call the shots.

Which is probably why Raymond left a fast-paced lawyering career with $70,000 in debt and no plan beyond an eight-day meditation retreat in Vermont.

Jonathan is the former CEO of Emyth.com and is the current CEO of Refound.com.

In his current role, he is helping to make mentors out of CEOs. Not just bosses.

His approach makes more cohesive, long-lasting teams as relationships of trust build.

The mentality is freeing.

Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.

That includes goal-setting, something we advocate for constantly.

Some Young Lions fall into the trap that they have to achieve their goals no matter what.

That can cause pain and suffering in other parts of their lives.

For instance, my partner Bill was chasing Olympic dreams in cycling for the 1980 and 1984 Olympics.

He says that his crushing goals flattened his personality until he was unidimensional.

“I wasn’t really fun to be around,” Bill told me as we recorded this podcast.

While goal-setting can improve all areas of your life, if it’s overly focused on one area they have that flattening effect.

Don’t let career goals stamp out your family life or vice versa.

This podcast will help you find the balance between setting goals and setting too many goals or the wrong kinds of goals.

So listen up – we want nothing more than to help you find this balance.

Are you willing to sacrifice your comfort zone?

Or are you happy being great at everything you do without expanding your horizons?

Everybody knows that one guy who sacrificed everything for his business.

Luckily, not everybody will have to eat Taco Bell and sleep in roach-infested apartments in drug-laden neighborhoods to find success. Jason Treu (pronounced “true”) has spent much of his career making himself uncomfortable – on purpose. Getting out of his comfort zone has led to his biggest successes.

The best thing to give up to make your business succeed is your comfort zone.

In recent years, Jason has emerged as a top business and executive coach and sales trainer. His extroverted nature has helped him burst through many of his personal comfort zones.

Getting out of his comfort zone has opened new horizons.

He has founded beextraordinary.tv and encourages people to build relationships that matter to find success. His clients often feel stuck and passionless. Treu motivates them out of that hole through his coaching. That usually includes advice to step out of your comfort zone.

Treu has worked alongside visionaries like Steve Jobs and Mark Cuban.

Despite his high-power counterparts, Treu at some point decided to be Batman instead of Robin, a large leap of faith outside his comfort zone. He nearly became a lawyer before he realized that most lawyers aren’t happy. That pushed him different directions before he found his calling.

While some people wallow in a job they hate, others have the faith to know that their lives will come out just fine if they’re doing what they love.

Just like a child’s game of “connect the dots,” our lives don’t always look like what we expect as all the dots come together, Young Lions. Once the dots are all connected, we can see a beautiful picture that we didn’t know was there going in.

Our guest today is David Ralph, an Englishman who often wore figurative clown shoes while his peers were wearing dress shoes. Ralph told me (Robert) in this episode that he used to see how many Beatles songs he could reference in high-powered meetings without anyone noticing – it was about 30, if you’re curious.

His craving for fun pushed him away from the corporate and banking worlds until he found his true calling in podcasting, where his clown shoes are welcome. He now runs joinupdots.com andpodcastersmastery.com, pumping out quality podcasts on entrepreneurial deep dives.

Yet in hindsight, it all connected into a beautiful macro picture that led him into his current line of work, where he told me he can shine and is no longer leading a double life.

Listen up to hear how David took a cue from Steve Jobs and watched the dots connect in his life to form something greater than he could have expected. His leap from the boardroom to the audio booth is as inspiring as it is fun.
