The Literacy Lab Appoints Johnathon Hines as the First National Education Ambassador for its Leading Men Fellowship. Georgia’s first Black male Pre-K Teacher of the Year hopes to inspire other young Black men to pursue teaching as a career. The Literacy Lab is a national non-profit organization that provides students – in communities experiencing racial and/or economic inequities – with evidence-based, culturally responsive literacy instruction as preparation for academic, professional, and personal success. The Literacy Lab partners with school districts to help close the literacy gap largely by embedding full-time, rigorously trained tutors in early childhood centers and elementary schools. The Literacy Lab’s Leading Men Fellowship creates opportunities for young men of color and increases representation in the field of education. Leading Men Fellows are young men of color who have recently graduated from high school and participate in a year-long, residency-style experience in which they provide evidence-based literacy support to pre-kindergarten students while receiving robust coaching and professional development and gaining valuable experience.  In this episode I chat to Johnathan Hines and Ivan Douglas, National Director of the Leading Men Fellowship. 344: The Literacy Lab and Leading Men Fellowship

Do you feel the education system is sucking the life out of you and the pupils you serve? I think many of us wish we could click our fingers and make it fit for purpose. A place of growth with shared learning that empowers pupils to be their best selves, so they can create a world they want to inhabit now and in the future.

While a magic wand or a visionary politician might sound like the answer I believe change is already happening. Educators are changing futures one conversation at a time. New technology and the environments where we learn are beginning to look different both in and out of the classroom. I hope you are seeing this first hand and are excited about what you can share with your pupils. We are having conversations, sharing organisations and communities that are supporting education in a way that you may have not experienced.

Educational change will come from us all working in way that supports the best interests of each of our pupils, personalised learning. Governments and policy makers will follow when they see fully how it can be different. So let us teach, coach, mentor and create an environment that fuels every child with feedback, inspiration, resilience and empowerment. Dr. Hemphill’s research focuses on teaching personal and social responsibility through sport, physical activity, and physical education with specific applications to urban communities and professional development programs for physical activity providers. His research is grounded in community-engaged scholarship, which features reciprocal community partnerships and interdisciplinary collaborations to address community-identified needs.  This research has been situated in local contexts in Charleston, SC and Greensboro, NC as well as international applications in New Zealand and Sri Lanka. He has published several research articles in refereed journals including the Journal of Youth Development, Journal of Teaching in Physical Education, European Physical Education Review, Physical Education & Sport Pedagogy, and Sport, Education, and Society.  Additionally, he has delivered research presentations to international, national, and regional conferences including the American Educational Research Association, SHAPE America, the International Association for Physical Education in Higher Education, and the International Association for Research on Service Learning and Community Engagement. He is a recipient of the community-engaged scholar award from the School of Health and Human Sciences and of the Charles D.
