From Dr. Rosalesmeza, "Decolonizing is our generation's sacred offering. May we resist it's commodification". Our culture is not your aesthetic. Last week, we discussed how images of our people have been used as a tool to other, dehumanize, sensationalize and colonize us. This week, we're discussing how these images are still being used and how the appropriation of indigenous culture into capital only re-traumatizes indigenous people. We talk about how we come to understand and observe how cultural appropriation and misappropriation happens. The issue of cultural appropriation can be a controversial conversation, but for us it's a conversation about accountability, power, and ways we can be responsible with how we use tangible and intangible elements of indigenous heritage.
