We receive an onslaught of words everyday...and we often ask ourselves, “Whose words can I trust?” There is a word that rises above it all...God’s word, made known through Jesus Christ. This word protects us, tells us that there is more than the onslaught of suffering and sorrow our human words tend to showcase. And it is a word we both receive and share with others, sent into the world just as Jesus was sent.

So many of our best laid plans are subject to forces we cannot control. But despite the frightening realization of our human limitations, there is something we can control: how we respond. God, who abides with us through it all, chooses us and invites us into abiding in God’s love.

The songs and spoken words of Zach Busch and Jearlyn Steele remind us of that very love as they lead us through a time of Matins prayer.

While we have arrived at the resurrection with alleluias voiced, we also continue in a time of paradox, one with waiting and heartbreak. In the midst we hear of the Good Shepherd, who loses no one, who seeks us, who finds us.

As we continue to journey through this Easter season, our shouts of Alleluia at Christ’s resurrection are matched with cries of lament as we face the harsh realities of this life. Death was defeated on the cross, and yet we suffer.

We move closer to Jesus and his cross. Sufjan Stevens sings: “there is no shade in the shadow of the cross.” The cross is where suffering is revealed...and then refracted to healing.

The brokenness of the world, of ourselves, is not ultimate. Jesus went the way of pain, turning suffering to healing; separation to community; death to life. We are led this week by Nate Crary and Luther Seminary student Hannah Sackett.

It has been one year since we last worshipped together in the Chapel of the Incarnation. We mark this difficult anniversary as we continue our way through this season of Lent.

Night prayer invites to reflect on the losses we have endured. We gather as community, apart but united.

We live in weary times. We seek to be awake, keep watch, hold vigil. 

We are led this week by Paul and Elizabeth Damico-Carper with the spoken liturgy by Luther Seminary student Ben Cox. This rest is not an abandonment of all that we hold in vigil. It is the acknowledgement of our limitation, our need to rest, our reliance on a God who does not slumber nor sleep. We rest so that we may awake to serve God in the care of our neighbors.
