Sun Yat-Sen is claimed by both Taiwan and Communist China as the Father of the Nation and the First Revolutionary. His persistent scheming and leadership played a major role in overthrowing the Qing Dynasty and establishing a parliamentary republic in 1911.

Wanna know how the last Chinese imperial dynasty fell?

Continuing our series on the history of US and Chinese Relations, this week we cover the Boxer Rebellion and how it contributed to the fall of the Qing Dynasty. In the last decade of Qing rule, Western powers plus Japan had carved up China into ‘spheres of influence’, except for the United States. With the growth of foreign influence, the Chinese people began to push back. Once such group, known by westerners as the Boxers, began to burn churches and murder Chinese converts. Things came to a head when the Boxers attacked the foreign embassies in Beijing. Unfortunately for them, they decided to mess around and found out that the US legation was defended by the US Marines…

China and the US began their official relationship on `bad terms with the "Unequal Treaties", and things only got worse from then on. Many Chinese look back on these decades as the beginning of a spiritual and cultural conflict between the Chinese and Americans, while many Americans simply viewed it as a business transaction. 

 Once the U.S gained official access to China, missionaries penetrated deep into the heartland of China along with American officials, from there they began to have an influence on the people of China. This influence was often good and gave rise to universal education and tried to end practices like foot binding, but this influence eroded the power of the Qing. With an impotent Qing dynasty, already festering ethnic conflict, plus underlying class conflict, the country was ripe for a rebellion. That rebellion was the Taiping Rebellion, which led to the death of 20 million Chinese people. So was the U.S really responsible? What was the impact of such a catastrophic event? And were Chinese immigrants given the same respect that Americans expected of the Chinese when they were in China? All of these questions will be answered on our latest episode.

China and the US have a complicated history as it relates to one another, and that relationship has felt significant strain over the past few years with COVID, contentious trade negotiations and now economic concerns. This leaves the question; how did these countries get here?

To answer that we will need to go back about 183 years to the Opium Wars and the beginning of the "100 years of Humiliation".  In 1839 Western powers needed a means to gain an advantage in trade over the Qing Dynasty, and opium was that advantage. The Qing resisted the Opium trade from the British initially and even confiscated, and destroyed much of the British supply, but the British retaliated. The British crushed the Qing in a series of battles and began "trading" opium to the Chinese. The British and other western powers began negotiating what the Chinese referred to as "Unequal Treaties" that gave the western powers (Great Britan, France, Portugal, Germany etc) highly favorable terms, special privileges and the ability to annex land along the coast of mainland China. The US under the Tyler administration didn't want to be left out and gained their own trade agreement. Though the Americans did not coerce the Qing into this agreement like the other western countries, the Chinese perception of the US was still negative. This humiliating experience would define Chinese motivation and actions for the next 183 years.

After the Second World War, the American dream was alive and well. People had jobs, money and were living in a golden age of the economy, what could go wrong? 

Well, a lot actually, increases in government spending, leaving the gold standard and two major energy crises in the 70s led to economic stalemate. This slowdown in growth combined with high interest rates and high inflation led to what we call "stagflation". So President Reagan worked with the chairman of the Federal Reserve Paul Volker to kick start the American economy, listen to this weeks episode to see if they were successful..

You were probably taught in your high school history class that President Roosevelt’s ‘New Deal’ is what got us out of the Great Depression. We have some news for you. Not only did the New Deal not get us out of the Great Depression, but it also probably made things worse.

Before investigative journalism was cool, Ida Tarbell had a score to settle. Standard Oil, arguably the largest monopoly in American history, had shut down many local businesses as it expanded its ever growing corporate web. In 1904 she published The History of the Standard Oil Company, which payed a key role in hastening that company’s demise.
