Kerri's son Harvey suffered a series of unfortunate events that led to having his licence suspended for nine months and a $1200 fee to free his car, which was impounded.

"He's always known as the point of call for his friends as he doesn't drink... he went to a party, waited for his mates in the car, they didn't come out," she told 6PR Afternoons host Jo McManus.

"The next minute a fight broke, police were called, the friends got in the car, they went to leave, and as they drove past, the police stopped him, and asked him why he was there... he explained, and in the same sentence he said 'but I need to leave because my licence is going to be suspended'."

A beloved UK-born novelist who has written almost 40 books across a range of genres has written her first one set entirely in Australia.

International bestselling author Fiona McIntosh has just released the new historical drama novel, The Orphans, set in the bustling streets of a young Adelaide.

"This came about because we were all in lockdown a couple of years, as I work two years ahead with each novel, and I was sort of forced to look into my own backyard for a story," she told Jo McManus on 6PR Afternoons.

"I've actually lived here for 40 years ... I felt Australians, people like Tim Winton, are going to write about Australia so much better than this blow-in, so I was terrified to write an Australian story and get it wrong, or let people down, so I just stayed in my own playground."

Tomorrow is the first day of summer, which means more time being spent around water, but sadly it's when rates of drowning tend to increase.

Royal Life Saving Society Australia CEO Justin Scarr is urging everyone to make water safety awareness a key priority this summer after drownings increased by 15 on the previous year to 333, including 145 over summer.

"Last year was an absolute shocker, obviosuly on the east coast we had significant flooding... and in the wake of COVID, we were out and about more, enjoying our wonderful waterways," he told 6PR Afternoons host Jo McManus.

"But it's absolutely tragic that with that increase activity, came some really disturbing drowning events.

"West Australians have done really well in forcing down drowning incidents, but last year was not a good one."
