The Lord of Life Lutheran Church Sermon Podcast

This week, guest preacher, Rev. Dr. Charlene M. Rachuy Cox, retells the story of Jesus teaching in the temple.

What single Bible verse most clearly identifies with your life story? What speaks to you? In the reading for today, Jesus defines himself by reading from a scroll and telling his audience that the prophecy of Isaiah had been fulfilled in their hearing. A pretty bold step.

God’s Work is present here, among us, today. It unfolds in, around and through our lives, today. Keep your eyes open to see it!

This week, guest preacher, Rev. Dr. Charlene M. Rachuy Cox, reminds us that the beginning is a very good place to start.

What began with a sign at a wedding feast at Cana has become a claim on your life that cannot be denied. You are extravagantly loved by God.

The light increases around us each day, but in order to see it, we have to be intentional each day. Jesus is the Light of the world, and during Epiphany we can learn to notice the Light each day so that we notice the increasing Light in us.

Look up! Look to the stars and, follow the Light.

A bright star in the nighttime sky draws three wise men to take the journey of a lifetime to encounter the Messiah, a child, Jesus. The rest, as they say, is history, but we are a part of it, too!

I love to sing the songs of Christmas, especially at our Christmas Eve worship services. They tell a story that is powerful and important. They remind us that God is with us, Emmanuel, in our joys and in our pains. The Christ child of Christmas shines a light into our world and into our lives.

You have a praise worthy story to tell! Mary and Elizabeth share their praise for God and their own humble celebration as they meet during their pregnancies, one caring John who will prepare the way for the Messiah and the other, the Christ child. Perhaps it’s time we started offering our praise for God so that others might see our faithfulness and be drawn into what God is already doing?

The third Sunday in Advent is known as JOY Sunday. The readings for the day reflect that joy, even the reading for today’s sermon podcast, though it’s hard to see it at first. How is it with your joy, your heart, your holiday season? Learn about waiting with joy (and hope) in today’s message.

Prepare the way! That’s John’s message for us this week, but what does that mean for us today? Where are the wilderness places for us to proclaim that Christ is coming?

The readings for Advent can seem a little out of sync with the feelings we have about the holidays, but they give us some clues about how to live in the midst of waiting and hoping. Pastor Anderson, Assistant to the Bishop for Northeast Iowa Synod, ELCA, shares some thoughts in our language at Lord of Life around the three great cares entrusted to us.

Jesus’ prophecy about the destruction of the temple may seem relevant to today’s world. Uncertainty, fires, floods, storms and wars, but in the midst of it all we are reminded that Christ is with us and that perhaps what we need to do is keep calm and carry on.
