To call Gerry Crispin a leader in the field of recruitment and human resources is akin to saying the sun is hot. On his LinkedIn page, Crispin describes himself as a “life-long student of hiring with a passion for conversations” about the recruiting process. Crispin and his business partner, Mark Mehler, founded CareerXroads in 1995. He has long been interested in building communities and in this episode of The Lorne Epstein Show we talk about his experience at “Burning Man,” a cultural event every summer that brings tens of thousands of people to the Black Rock Desert about 100 miles northeast of Reno, Nevada to build a community in a just a few days. He says he went to burning man “trying to figure out how to articulate better how community forms (and) what does it form around?” Crispin says every November he travels to other countries, including Japan, Eastern Europe, Cuba, and India, to “step outside…(his) box”, engaging with employers, professors, students and governments about how their communities hire and manage workers. After 50 years in the field, Crispin says he is as curious about the world as when he was a graduate student.
