The Lost Colony of Roanoke

Listen Later

In 1587, John White led a group of 118 colonists to the first English settlement on Roanoke Island off the coast of North Carolina. But when the colony's leader, John White, made a trip back to England to get supplies, he returned to Roanoke to find all the settlers had vanished. They left behind only a single clue, the word “Croatoan” carved into a post. The colonists were never seen again. Historians and archaeologists have been trying to figure out what happened to those initial settlers ever since.

THEORIES: They integrated into the Lumbee Tribe, they were kidnapped by another tribe, they died from diseases, they moved inland for more food, or they tried to sail back to England.

ALSO: Maria gets furious over Melissa not knowing what the Brave Little Toaster is.
