Lovely love letters
I stayed up reading until my eyes burned. I didn't want it to end, I wanted to read about love and letters and robots forever.
A Beautifully Written Novel of Being "Different" and of Finding Yourself Worthy of Being Loved ...
In Laura Creedle's âThe Love Letters of Abelard and Lilyâ, Lily Michaels-Ryanâs ADHD and dyslexia combine to make school and personal relationships with her peers difficult. Her younger sister Iris is academically gifted and loves to study, giving Lily even more reason to question her worth and her future. Her parents are divorced; Lily believes her father lives in Portland on a farm.
When Lily investigates noises coming from a panel dividing two classrooms and accidentally breaks the door mechanism, her story takes some unexpected turns. Along with Peter Abelard who was on the other side, Lily receives in-school suspension. Lily has known Abelard since kindergarten and once clobbered him with her lunchbox, leaving a small scar on his cheek. Abelard, a genius, is on the autism spectrum.
A shared interest in âHeloise and Abelardâ and Abelardâs ability to quote from that work initiate the nightly texting communication between Lily and Abelard. As the two begin to reconnect, they find they are able to complement each otherâs strengths and to compensate for each otherâs weaknesses. Some twists and the charactersâ challenges help prevent the novel from becoming clichéd or stereotyped as a teen romance.
The first person narrative adds a dimension and personal dynamic to Lilyâs story that is often missing from novels for the target reader group, age 12-years and older. Her family life and the absence of her beloved father create greater issues for Lily than might have been evident. Abelardâs Aspbergerâs Syndrome and his coping mechanisms, along with Lilyâs understanding and acceptance provide the story with additional positive aspects from which readers may learn.
Language and situations are appropriate for most readers. Physical intimacy consists of several light kisses and of one instance in which Abelard touches the skin under Lilyâs shirt at the waist. Language is appropriate for the age of the characters; there is some mild profanity, but no use of the âf-wordâ or vituperative speech.
âThe Love Letters of Abelard and Lilyâ is a beautifully written novel of self-discovery and of Lilyâs recognition that her differences make her special and worthy of love. Laura Creedleâs debut novel is a heart-warming, poignant story, narrated by Lily that will resonate with anyone who is or was âdifferentâ.
