The Love of Cinema

This week, the boys hop in their jalopy and head west for California to discuss John Ford’s 1940 Masterpiece “The Grapes of Wrath”. Based on John Steinbeck’s novel, of course, this film is not a comedy. Good thing we drink beers and buzz each other for saying anything negative, so we can have a fun time discussing why Dave and Jeff didn’t give the movie a gold star. Grab a drink and listen in!

This week, the boys head to London and Paris to discuss 1948’s “The Red Shoes”! Our first Powell and Pressburger film; we got to drinking and kept it positive while talking about this absolute classic. From groundbreaking dance sequences to technical achievement to sensational performances, this film blew us away almost as hard as it did Martin Scorsese, who stole some filmmaking ideas for “Raging Bull” and led a restoration effort on this film. John also talked about “Digger”… sort of, and John and Jeff discussed “Resident Evil” (2026). Grab a beer and listen along!

Gavin O’Connor’s film found Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton at the perfect time, and he paired them with legend Nick Nolte for one of his best performances. Jeff also saw “Practical Magic 2” in the theaters on 9/11 and gives a mini-review. Two very different films! They both go well with drinks. Maybe wine or margaritas for the witch film, and whiskey and/or coffee (for our non-drinkers) for the MMA film. Grab a drink and join us!

This week, the boys revisit their most prolific year, 2022! Despite seeing many movies (and pod-ing: check our feed!), we had a blind spot: Ron Howard’s incredible real-life suspense movie “Thirteen Lives”, starring Viggo Mortensen, Collin Farrell, and Joel Edgerton. It’s available to stream for free (with a sub) on Prime Video, and it’s 100% worth your time! Dave and Jeff also give a spoiler-free mini-review of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”, and Dave got an advanced look at “One Night Only” and enjoyed it! Grab a beer and tune in.

This week, the boys head back to 1937 to discuss the real OG “A Star Is Born”. Produced by David O. Selznick right before he went into production on “Gone With The Wind”, he hired two Oscar winners, Janet Gaynor and Frederic March, to tell this classic rags-to-riches Hollywood story that inspired three more! Before that conversation, John and Jeff share their spoiler-free thoughts on “The Odyssey”, Christopher Nolan’s little indie film based on previously undiscovered source material.

Sidney Lumet’s 1964 Cold War “what-if” came out the same year as, but a few months after, “Dr. Strangelove…” (previous episode), but ohhhhh man does this movie feel prescient. I mean, no crazy people are in charge of nuclear weapons that can catastrophize global Armageddon, right?? Grab a beer and let’s talk about this powerful warning.
