  • The Window and The Mirror

What if the things we see most clearly in other people are sometimes reflections of ourselves?

In this episode of The Love of Recovery, Paul and Jennifer explore the idea of the window and the mirror. In daylight, a window allows us to see the world clearly. But as the light outside fades, the same glass begins reflecting what is inside the room. Eventually, the window becomes a mirror.

That image leads to a conversation about judgment, self-centeredness, ego, shame, and our tendency to focus on what other people need to change rather than becoming curious about what our reactions might reveal about ourselves.

From there, the conversation moves into comparison, our attempts to manage other people, and the freedom that can come from allowing others the dignity to make their own choices and live their own consequences.

In the end, perhaps the people who irritate, challenge, or confuse us can offer something unexpected: an opportunity to see ourselves more clearly.

The glass hasn't changed. The light has.

  • No. 2 Pencil: Comparison, Perfection, and Who We Are

What happens when an idea we've heard a thousand times is challenged?

In this episode of The Love of Recovery, Paul and Jennifer begin with a simple principle: take what fits and leave the rest—but understand why.

That leads to a conversation about “progress, not perfection,” a pencil that is perfect until another pencil is placed beside it, and the way comparison can change how we see ourselves without changing who we actually are.

From there, the conversation moves into resentment, spirituality, experiences of judgment and exclusion, and the importance of remaining curious about ideas that make us uncomfortable.

In the end, life may be less like completing a perfect picture and more like painting one: we are both the palette and the canvas, and today is simply another brushstroke.

You don't have to have the whole painting finished today. You only have to be where the brush is now.

  • Introduction

Welcome to The Love of Recovery.

This podcast isn’t about one specific issue or one particular kind of recovery. It’s about something underneath all of them: the human condition itself—self-centeredness, ego, and shame.

In this introductory episode, Paul Stecker, author of The Love of Recovery, introduces a practical path built around three simple tools: honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness, and three stages of change: awareness, acceptance, and action.

Because understanding the problem isn’t enough. We don’t simply think our way into a different life. We practice our way into one.

If you came looking for a tool, you may find something else along the way: a mirror.
